Movie Reviews of DraculaMovie Review: Next to Lugosi this is the best Summary: 5 Stars
I had really forgotten how good this movie was. Ok, so Frank Langella isn't Bela Lugosi who is probably the best to ever play the role. But, he's a great deal better than some of the Hammer Film actors who played various incarnations of the world's favorite bloodsucker over the years. Highly erotic in spots, if you're looking for Lugosi, you're not going to find it in this version. And its infinitely better than the computerized special-effects versions that have come along in recent years, make no mistake about that. Langella's performance is on-the-money as a somewhat sexually appealling Dracula (just what the ladies need) and after having played the role on Broadway for a year prior to the movie, brought fresh insights into a character whose last good incarnation was by Lugosi.
If you're a fan of the Count, have the Lugosi version and are looking to see what others have done with the role, this is the version to buy. If you're into schlock and computerized special effects, buy one of the more recent versions. You can't go wrong with this version, despite what some others might say.
Movie Review: Frank Langella Rules as Dracula! Summary: 5 Stars
Although this story is slightly different than Bram Stoker's novel, it is, by far, my favorite rendition of the the story due to Mr. Langella's portrayal of the 'Count'.
I especially enjoyed the scene in which Count Dracula invites 'Lucy' for dinner to Carfax Abbey. As she walks into the 'dining room' I was blown away by the lighting effects and scenic effects of a run down castle.
And speaking about effects, the 'love scene' was indeed as romantic as any could imagine a love scene to be with a blood sucking vampire and a fair maiden. Mr. Langella stole my heart at that scene in the 1970's as he has continued to do since.
I applaud John Badham for this version of the story where we see minimal 'blood and guts' in a 'blood and guts' story. Of course, it was before the 'slasher' movies reigned, but are those slasher movies able to stand up now as they did when they first came out on the 'big screen'?
Mr. Badham has made a first rate, dark, frightening story which has been and will always be my favorite 'Dracula' for all time.
Love,Love,Love!!!
Movie Review: Must see for Dracula curiousities Summary: 5 Stars
In my English Literature class we are discussing vampires and Dracula, and with that we're watching all movies associated with the two. So far, we've watched both Nosferatu's, Bela's Dracula, Chris Lee's Dracula and now, Langella'a Dracula. So far, it's my favorite! The movie itself is based on Bram Stoker's Book and the play. This Dracula is somewhat out of sequence, but I think it flows better this way. I like the character switch between Lucy and Mina and the setting flows better with this version (as opposed to Bela's Dracula) Before this class I couldn't tell you who Frank Langella was. I now know that I've seen him before, just never knew he played Dracula. Damn that goofy George Harrison...The score is beautiful, I loved the wolf scenes and even the psychedelic love scene worked for me. Langella/Dracula is sexy and sweet and sad all at the same time. If you've read Bram Stokers novel, all these movies are worth watching once, but if your a hopeless romantic this one is worth buying.
Movie Review: One of the Best Summary: 5 Stars
This movie stars one of the most underrated actors of our time, who has finally got his just notices for the movie Nixon/Frost: Frank Langella. A fine actor who immediately captures your attention the moment he walks into the room and keeps it throughout the rest of the movie. Langella does an exceptional job of turning on the charm and in the next instant, you can feel the evil lurking beneath; just enough to give you chills wondering what's going to happen next. Langella's charisma makes any woman say "Bite me next!". But seriously, the addition of Olivier as the vampire hunter Van Helsing gives us some wonderful moments as only Olivier can give. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie when I saw it in the theater years ago, and now own 2 copies, both VHS and DVD. The only thing I take exception to is the fact that the screenwriter switched the roles of Mina and Lucy from the book. Other than that, if you like your vampires romantic and strong, this one's for you.
Movie Review: A hot and juicy Dracula flick Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my favorite Dracula movies and i've seen all the classics from Bela lugosi to Christopher Lee.
Frank Langella plays Dracula as a suave and sexy monster who can really sweep a girl off of her feet not just with his powers but with his charisma alone.
Kate Nelligan is one of the sexiest Lucy's i've ever watched and i would'nt mind taking a bite out of her myself.
Sir Laurence Olivier delivers a great performance as Dr. Van Helsing presenting the DR. as a truly fearless vampire killer and the confrontations between him and Dracula are pretty intense.
Everybody is truly into their characters and the special effects which were pretty innovative for 1979 just enhance the visual pleasure.
This is one top notch vampire flick showing us a more sexy and debonair Dracula who can also rip your head off at the drop of a hat.
Go ahead and take a bite!
