Movie Reviews of Dracula

Movie Review: Sensual Dracula 101
Summary: 5 Stars

There is room for a fine Dracula on the shelf. But first let's get this out of the way: this movie does not follow the Bram Stoker original classic very closely, especially in regards to characters. Big deal. This is 'Fine and hot Dracula'. So proceed knowing that the screenwriters took liberties with the women. Stoker's Lucy was Dracula's victim and it was Mina he fell in love with. In this movie, that is reversed. Kate Nelligan plays Lucy, with whom Dracula falls head over fangs in love with, and Mina is bitten and becomes a vampire who attacks a baby... etc.

How to play a sensual Dracula 101: Frank Langella has it all and then some as the famous Count Dracula in this terrific Hollywood production. The way he moves and speaks; the way he stares... no one can resist him. Not even the men. The performances of the other characters are above par as well. The women are well-played. Mina is weak, Lucy is strong. Jonathan is a wuss, Seward eats all the time and is probably high on Laudanaum... and Van Helsing is as scary as Dracula is supposed to be.

Dracula is hard to hate in this film. I was pulling for him. The imagery, the costumes, the music and the dancing (yes I like the dancing scene), all have me coming back for seconds and thirds.

If you like Dracula movies and don't hate a little romance, check this one out.

Have fun and chew some garlic...

Movie Review: Dracula - At His All Time Best
Summary: 5 Stars

There never has been nor will there ever be a Dracula quite like the one portrayed by Frank Langella in this film. Mr. Langella exudes sensuality through every pore of his body. From the first scene where he has been tossed onto the beach after a shipwreck, we see him slowly moving his hand out of his coat sleeve to gently grasp the hand of the young lady (Mina) who finds and rescues him. Just this simple movement is sooooo sexy. This man's eyes, voice and body language is full of sexuality and you have no trouble believing that women would be more than willing to lie down and remove any obstacles from their neck so they could receive his bite. This film is actually very erotic. The music is fantastic and definitely plays a roll in creating this intense sensual feeling. This is true throughout this film. You still feel this major attraction to Dracula with the last flap of his cape. You find yourself wanting this gorgeous "monster" to win every altercation. What fun....You are in a whole different place and just become totally involved with the romance of it. This is actually a very romantic film.

I was sorry to read the editor's view listed above. It's almost like I saw a whole different movie. I LOVED IT!!! Please do yourself a favor and see this film. If you don't buy it (you'll be sorry) at least rent it. I was sorry when it ended. I could've watched this all night and still wanted more.

Movie Review: Langella's performance recommended by real vampires!
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this when it was made, and just have to agree with Angel (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) that Frank Langella best captured Dracula's essence (I love that this conversation came up on an episode of Buffy). His sensuality, his magnetism, his physical beauty, all come together to create the character of Dracula so convincingly that it becomes quite believable that vampires really do exist. While the stylized, philosophical and breathtakingly filmed versions of the legend, "Nosferatu" both Murnau's and Herzog's, are compelling and gorgeous films, they don't attempt to convince us of the real existence of vampires. Somehow this film, through Frank Langella's performance coupled with that of the lovely and intelligent Kate Nelligan, make this quite a believable tale. Bram Stoker would be thrilled to see his creation come so vividly and enthrallingly to life.

My advice is to sit back, watch, and take Angel's recommendation seriously--clearly, at least two vampires we know of, Angel and Langella's Dracula, really do exist. Watching them is great fun, especially for we women on those days when we just long for someone gorgeous to look at us with eyes burning with passion--someone who will sweep us up into strong arms, and take us away to places Calgon can't even remotely get us to (*sigh*)!

Movie Review: A most underrated version of the beloved story!
Summary: 5 Stars

After upon arriving in London from Transylvania, Count Dracula (Frank Langella) is the only survivor on a ship as Mina Van Helsing (Jan Francis) rescues him as she is on her way to visit her good friend Lucy (Kate Nelligan). Dracula meets Lucy, her father Seward (Donald Plesance) and fiancee Harker (Trevor Eve) as they make Dracula feel welcome at home, that is until Dracula lusts for both Lucy and Mina for he feeds upon them and other victims in an English village. Doctor Van Helsing (Laurence Olivier), Seward and Harker team together to try to put an end to the king of vampires.

A highly underrated version of the timeless story from Bram Stoker! this Walter Mirsch (Pink Panther) production is one of the better Dracula adaptations. John Williams boasts a tremendous score and Langella portrayed Dracula well like Bela, Christopher Lee, Gary Oldman and more. There is a romantic and sexual passion in this 1979 version even though it's different from the book, the special effects for it's day are quite good and some of the acting is good too. It's based more on the play that Langella starred rather than any other version of Dracula as i say it works very well.

This DVD contains a great transfer with few extras like audio commentary, featurette and photo gallery.

Movie Review: Sexy and Horrific - a MUST See
Summary: 5 Stars

This version of Dracula is one of the best. The color has been "drained" no pun intended from the film, but NOT ALL OF THE COLOR. It's just not sickly-bright with colors. It's more like a very dusty, gray, and cold day in New England, and that my readers can and is very creepy. Initially, I did miss the blood red and blood shot eyes of Mina and Lucy (now more like a deep reddish-brown color, but the film is so stunningly dark and the music by John Williams so rich and beautiful, it cancelled out all my concern for this version of the film. This is better version in my opinion. This is a very sexy Dracula, and it's more intellectual than most "other" Dracula movies. The acting by the entire cast is really refreshing, very professional and believable. It's good to see a Dracula movie that is not too humorous. Although there is humor in it, it is very subtle. If you want a creepy and sexy Dracula, this one is for you. Give it a try, it's really a modern-classic, and I've been waiting for it to come out on DVD with its re-mastered version in every sense of the word. SEE THIS MOVIE IN THE DARK with someone special (romantic). It's going to be a good night with this version of Dracula. Oh, and bring some wine to this dark and romantically gothic movie.
