Movie Reviews of Dr. Phibes Rises Again!Movie Review: Fiendish Phibes is unleashed on the world again !! Summary: 5 Stars
Vincent Price easily deserved the title of king of the B-grade horror flicks. He obviously relished playing larger than life villains and the merciless Dr. Phibes is one of his best roles !After fleeing from the law to his secret crypt at the end of "The Abominable Dr. Phibes", Phibes (Price) returns to again seek out a way to return his deceased wife to the living and deal with interfering interlopers along the way too ! His quest takes him to Egypt in search of the river of life that can provide the answer to his dreams..... The second Phibes film is even more polished than the first, with Robert Quarry providing a fine adversary to Phibes as the cunning archaelogist Beiderbeck, himself living on borrowed time. Additionally, there is a wonderful support cast with such luminaries as Peter Cushing, Terry Thomas & Hugh Griffiths adding more finesse to this production. And keeping in line with the Biblical plagues & gory comeuppances aspect of the first Phibes production, those persons stupid enough to challenge the evil doctor soon meet their doom by a variety of grisly and ingenious means !! A campy, thrilling and entertaining film that has not diminshed in enjoyment on each subsequent viewing....and the transfer to DVD has kept the colors and art deco mood of the film very well. A definite recommendation to any cult film fans collection...both Phibes adventures are grand entertainment !
Movie Review: Finally on DVD Summary: 5 Stars
My Phibes collection is now completed with the second and final installment of the movie series.
Phibes is back with his bag full of curses in search of the river of Styx to hopefully revive his wife who has been embalmed for years. But now Phibes has an arch rival who is also in search of the river of Styx for his own use.
But thanks to the bag full of curses, Phibes has means of protecting what he finds.
We are not so treated with the wonderful score of music as with the first movie, but this features the removed "Over The Rainbow" track sung by Phibes (Vincent Price) at the end. This track was original removed from all US VHS releases due to copyright issues, but has been placed back into this DVD release (and its a creepy sung version at that!).
Great movie for a great... ahem...Price...;)
Movie Review: It is strange how such a campy film can be so horrifying! Summary: 5 Stars
Three years after the events of The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Dr. Phibes (played by Vincent Price) awakens to find that his house has been demolished and his papers stolen. The secret to bringing his wife back to life lies in Egypt, and he will stop at nothing to unlock that secret. But, inspector Trout (Peter Jeffrey) is on his trail, following the trail of dead bodies, determined to end Phibes' reign of terror.
This sequel is quite excellent, with Vincent Price turning in another stellar performance as Dr. Phibes. He maintains the creepiness, as he moves through a strangely surreal reality, always pulling the story back from silliness into pure horror. If you liked the first movie, then you will definitely like the second one. It is strange how such a campy film can be so horrifying!
I highly recommend this movie!
Movie Review: Long Time Love for Dr Phibes Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw the Dr Phibes two picture series years ago and taped the "Dr Phibes rises again" sequel as the best of the two. I recently bought the DVD from Amazon and was amazed at the improved resolution and clarity over my treasured tape version. So if you have a tape version of either movie, get the DVD as it is a great improvement. As for the movie, what can I say. Vincent Price is a master of satire and plays it to the fullest in this movie. In spite of the horror you will laugh your head off at the way he lampoons the more serious horror movies. It's all preposterous but a great show, will keep teenagers glued to the screen for hours as well as me and I'm in my 80's.
Movie Review: Finally, Phibes lives on DVD Summary: 5 Stars
As features go, this is bare bones. The only extra is the trailer - grainy but cool. There wasn't even a guide or as much as an insert in the case - just the DVD. But what a DVD - great quality, good sound (although mono, so center chan. only.)
No horror or Price fan should be without this DVD. Same goes for The Abon, er, Abomim, er Abomomomm, you know, the first Dr. Phibes.
Price at his best, obviously enjoying himself. The enging features the original final music number, with Phibes singing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" as he poles his way down the river of eternal life. The VHS version and TV versions removed this because of some copyright fight.
