Movie Reviews of Dr. Jekyll & Mistress Hyde

Movie Review: Somethings Come Over You
Summary: 5 Stars

This candy colored day dream is certainly a departure from the typical SC flick and in my opinion it works well! Played totally straight as oposed to the quaint "don't take this seriously" style SC is known for, Dr Jeckyll and Misstress Hyde contains no corny one liners or sight gags, striving to be stylish despite it's low budget limitations. This could have being a failure, nothing is more embarassing than a 'bad movie' trying to be serious, however this is not the case.

When I say "stylish", I don't mean fast cutting MTV nonsense or drawn out storyline, the director has obviously taken his inspiration from Euro cult films of the 60's and 70's. Being a huge fan of this genre, I naturally saw this right away. For example the scenes with the records playing seem to be inspired by an Italian film know as 'Amuck', however played out differently by this director, unlike HollyWood punks like Tarentino who do a direct copy and call it original. Overall Misstress Hyde has the dream like quality of a Franco, a Fulci or a Rollin, with great attention to lighting and camera angles. The music also goes along way to establishing the neccessary ambience for this style to work. In a similar vein to the music of the Euro genre, Misstress Hyde has a very groovy soundtrack. The only bad thing I can say about this film is that some of the dialogue seems at times to be out of sync.

The presentation of this film on DVD is certainly ambitious for SC as well. Issued in a limited to 20,000 edition numbered 2 disc box set, this DVD certainly makes a handsome addition to any collection. The movie DVD has some nice extras, but the real icing on the cake is the inclusion of a second disc, an audio CD of the films soundtrack. Fans of 'Beat at Cinecitta' or 'Black Emanuelle's Groove' type albumns, like myself, will surely appreciate this great little CD.

Overall a very solid purchase, which would be regretable to miss out on.

Movie Review: Don't expect Citizen Kane!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are the type who only likes to watch highbrow dramas or Hollywood blockbusters full of CGI effects, this movie is not for you. Now, on the other hand, if you like exploitation, better yet - sexploitation, then this should be right up you alley.

This a Seduction Cinema film. They do one thing, and they do it well. They create sofe-core, lesbian romps with the male viewer in mind. So, know what you're getting into in advance.

This is not an erotic thriller in the vain of 9 1/2 Weeks or Two Moon Junction. Those films have much more plot and much less nudity than this film.

Now, having said all of that you're probably asking yourself why I gave the film 5 stars. Well, I got exactly what I expected out of the film. Actually, it exceeded my expectations.

This is the first Seduction Cinema film I have watched. I know that they are mainly known for humorous spoofs of big blockbusters. This, however, is played straight. Yes, some of the acting leaves a lot to be desired, but the camera work and lighting are very good for a film shot on video. This along with women in various compromising positions and a few unexpected turns along the way made for a very enjoyable viewing experience. I will definitely take a look at more of their movies in the future.

This package also includes a CD with the film's soundtrack. Good luck getting the catchy tune "Somethings Come Over You" out of your head.

Highly reccommended for those who enjoy this kind of flick. Come on, you know who you are.

Movie Review: The best I've seen so far
Summary: 5 Stars

I have seen several Seduction Cinema movies. This one, Gladiator Eroticvs, and Lord Of The G-Strings and by far this is the best one. For once, seduction cinema has included the sounds of the sex in the movie. Although I can tell that they were dubbed.

The best way for me to descibe this movie to you is that it is a lesbien movie with a surprise twist of a conclusion, and how often do you find that in porn?

I really like the extras on this disc because it gets into the terrible lifestyle of the people involved in the movie. At one point the director is talking about what he did last night. He says "we injected some things, we smoked some things...".

If any one with Seduction Cinema ever reads this, I would like to see a fair-skined, dark haied Asian woman in your future movies. You had one with blond hair in this movie. Or maybe some Internet porn stars (Mason Storm or Dana Hayes) in your future productions.

Movie Review: Great film
Summary: 5 Stars

This was my first Seduction Cinema film, Misty Mundae caught my attention, but when I first saw it, it left my mind thinking. I know erotic films do not quite do that, but something about it made me think. And Misty Mundae and Julian Wells were great, they just are great on film. Tony Margusila the director did a good job and I cannot wait for Dracula.

Movie Review: A steamy, erotic dream.
Summary: 4 Stars

At the insistence of her patient, a repressed girl named Martine Flatstone (played by Misty Mundae), Dr. Jackie Stevenson (Julian Wells) injects her with an experimental drug meant to unleash the inner psyche. The girl professes love to her kindly doctor, then wigs out and shows her just what kind of love she is talking about. Dr. Jackie doesn't put up much a fight for long, but Martine's mind is blown beyond repair by too much of a good thing. Feeling both guilty and aroused, Dr. Jackie decides to experiment on herself. Her inner psyche, a cauldron of lesbian lust she names Heidi, comes to the surface and immediately heads out on the prowl. She finds a young hooker named Dawn (also played by Mundae) who reminds her of Martine and the two begin a torrid affair that may or may not be what it appears to be.

Dr. Jekyll and Mistress Hyde is a nicely done little dream of a movie. As the story progesses one does not know how much is real or illusion. Is Dawn really Martine, or does she exist at all? The line is further blurred when Dawn unknowningly becomes a patient of Dr. Jackie. When it comes to performing as their dual characters, Wells is a tad better than Mundae in the acting department, but the two work well together and there is genuine heat generated in their pairing up under different character personas. Watching the movie a second time, I noticed that Jackie and Dawn's dialog in regards to their first time experiences are practically identical, and what was with that red suitcase? First we see Jackie carrying it, then Dawn has it in the very next scene. It is clear that the director and screenwriter wanted this to be more than just a toss away erotic comedy (it is played straight, an early scene involving a maid appearing to be the only attempt at comedy) and it is that noble intention that makes Dr. Jekyll and Mistress Hyde above average. Fans of Jean Rollin and his ilk should find something to enjoy here.

The Collector's Edition disc features the film's soundtrack, which isn't that bad, and a behind the scenes documentary that is as long as the movie itself is included. Those interested in how a movie like this is made, and what the people who make a movie like this are really like, will appreciate it. This is a welcome addition to my library.
