Movie Reviews of DownfallMovie Review: the first great film of 2005: a must-see Summary: 5 StarsHaving been in a couple US history classes, I've been exposed to quite a few accounts of World War II's causes and effects, beginning and end, etc. Every ounce of the information I was taught was from our perspective. Finally, the Germans have made a film about the last ten days of the Third Reich that looks at the end of the war from the perspective of Hitler and his allies within a bunker beneath a collapsing Berlin. "Downfall" provides a view of the Nazis that has never before been seen on the big screen (in my experience, anyway): director Oliver Hirschbiegal portrays the Nazis not as soulless monsters, but as people who made every action out of their own will. Apparantly, there was some controversy concerning this decision; afterall, I, for one, am not used to seeing a film entirely populated by Nazis (let alone in their most desparate hours). However, the humanity on screen does not make the characters more sympathetic but makes clear that none of them had any excuse for what they did; to call them inhuman or down-right demonic would be giving them an excuse. They are people that inexplicably came to follow a man who, though obviously twisted, was a person, too, responsible for every one of his terrible actions.
Thus, "Downfall" is a cinematic triumph. It is of utmost importance, regardless of quality. But even the direction and screenwriting are pulsating with a rare power and intensity; it's a war film that does not go on and on only supported with a weak foundation of patriotic sentiment. Its action sequences are spectacularly filmed, including scenes devastating in their dexterity and interweaving of breathtaking visuals and the World War II Nazi state of mind. Topping off a profound ensemble cast is Bruno Ganz, who gives us an animated, emotionally sick Hitler. He manages to make what may seem over-the-top curiously effective. The combined efforts of the cast and technical crew make "Downfall" 2005's first must-see film, as well as its first near-masterpiece.
