Movie Reviews of DoubtMovie Review: Definitely Award Winning Acting Summary: 5 Stars
I am beginning to wonder if there is any movie in which Philip Seymour Hoffman does not excel. Sames goes for Meryl Streep. Streep plays Sister Aloysius, feared principal of a Catholic school during the mid 60's. Sister James, played by Amy Adams, witnesses what she thinks may be inappropriate behavior between Father Flynn (Hoffman) and the school's only black student. Sister Aloysius, feeling threatened by the priest's progressive thinking and harboring a deep dislike for him, is intent on proving the priest has committed a crime against the boy. Flynn, however, insists he is merely trying to protect this young black student from the other students and a father who continually beats him. The conflict between the nun and the priest is intense and fierce and well-done with Sister James nervously hovering in the background, unsure who to believe.
These three actors turn in fine performances in an intriguing movie. Another actor who plays a small part but does it so well is Viola Davis, who plays the black student's mother. Her few minutes on-screen are poignant and powerful and could not have been done any better.
Movie Review: Well written, well acted and a good mystery Summary: 5 Stars
When I see the talents of Meryl Streep squandered in films like "Mama Mia," I am certain that her only absolution and redemption is to make a film like "Doubt." Some may lament the subtle development of the characters and mystery and the equally subtle resolution, but for me it's about time we don't get some obvious ending where everyone and everything is happily resolved. Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays the priest with the perfect amount of good 'ole boy among fellow priests and bully--threatening any who dare question him. In a small scene in the film Viola Davis (for which she deserved the best supporting actress) and Meryl Streep discuss the options of a young black child in 1960's America. This small scene tells more than many hand-wringing epics on the same subject. Amy Adams (who also was nominated for best supporting actress for this film) acted more as a catalyst between the giant roles of Streep and Hoffman, and in some respects depicted the bewilderment of the audience. Her doubts were our doubts. All of these actors deserved Oscars, as did the writers, directors and everyone else involved in the best film of 2008.
Movie Review: Like it says.......Doubt Summary: 5 Stars
I had to watch this movie twice to figure out if I liked it.
The three main characters:
Meryl Streep is wonderful in it as she is a wonderful actress. At first, you would be expected to dislike her character as a hard-boiled, stringent nun, and principal, with no desire for laughter and fun, music, ball point pens, sugar or candy, or deviation from her rigid, age-old beliefs.
But then you begin to doubt if she is as mean as she appears to be. Is she simply someone who demands lifeless rigidity in her routine, stricking horror in the Catholic students, or is she relentless in her need to protect the children and demand the truth?
Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman)leaves you doubting, as well. Is he a progressive, caring priest to his students, especially the downtrodden, or is he really a sexual predator? You could come to either conclusion.
Sister James (Amy Adams)is another one who has two sides...she is sweet and gentle, yet she is aware enough to suspect possible wrongdoing in Father Flynn. She wavers from suspicion to understanding.
Movie Review: Brilliant, Kid-friendly and family-approved! Summary: 5 Stars
This is an EXCELLENT movie that reveals the harm we do to others when we draw upon our OWN suspicions and conclusions of our OWN minds WITHOUT evidence to confirm our adopted "belief." However, a BRILLIANT and PERFECTLY-PLACED little "twist" reveals what damage we do to OURSELVES in the end!
Normally, I like movies that DEFINE whose BAD and GOOD or RIGHT and WRONG. This movie FAILS my demand-to-know, but it FAILS so gracefully, that it really didn't matter who was "RIGHT" or "WRONG" in the end. While it leaves viewers with undefined DOUBT, it's what makes this movie unique and brilliant. It is NOT your ordinary "busting the "GUILTY" as much as clearly revealing the damages and consequences of gossip, tale-bearing, meddling, and hell-raising without evidence!
I didn't want to watch this movie. I thought "Another priest abusing a child kind-of-movie." My sister wanted to watch it-so I bought it & watched with the family. But, boy, I was WRONG!! THIS IS AWESOME....and I didn't find any scene unsuitable for younger viewers...Enjoy!!
Movie Review: A Gripping Movie Summary: 5 Stars
First, I must say that I have NEVER been a fan of Meryl Streep, but in THIS movie she is AWESOME. As for the reviewer who found this film "glib," I would strongly disagree!
This is not a movie about [...] and the priesthood, per se. It is a character study of two strong personalities, a priest and a mother superior, and the battle of wills between them. The title of the movie is VERY appropriate, for "doubt" is exactly what the film is about.
I believe that this is an IMPORTANT movie for many reasons. Who are we as humans? Who do we trust? Who CAN we trust? HOW do we trust when a sacred trust has been shattered? SHOULD we trust anyone anymore?
BTW, I also highly recommend the movie "Our Fathers," starring Ted Danson, although I don't think Danson was up to this role. The supporting cast was superb. Christopher Plummer gave a magnificent portrayal of Cardinal Bernard Law. It is the factual story of the attorney who forced to light the Boston priest [...] scandals several years ago.
