DOUBLE TEAM

(USA - 1997)

Aspect ratio: 2.39:1 (Super 35)
Theatrical soundtracks: SDDS / Dolby Stereo SR

A counter-terrorist officer (Jean-Claude Van Damme) pursues the criminal mastermind (Mickey Rourke) who has kidnapped Van Damme's pregnant wife (Natacha Lindinger).

An American action movie, directed by noted Chinese filmmaker Tsui Hark on European locations, featuring an unlikely combination of Belgian beefcake (Van Damme) and US basketball icon (Dennis Rodman) as the good guys pitted against Rourke's pumped-up terrorist, seeking revenge for the death of his infant son! A curious mixture, designed to introduce Tsui to international audiences following the director's long - and successful - career in SE Asia (where he produced and/or directed a number of iconic entries, including the "Once Upon a Time in China" and "A Better Tomorrow" series).

Narrative and characterization are minimal at best, and the visual effects are surprisingly poor for a late 1990's action pic, but die-hard fans will doubtless embrace the film's outrageous set-pieces, including a final showdown between Van Damme and Rourke in a crumbling Roman arena which recalls the Colosseum battle between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in THE WAY OF THE DRAGON (1972). Voyeurs will also appreciate the attention lavished on Van Damme's physical splendor: Watch out for a brief - but memorable - sequence in which the almost-naked actor uses a weighted bathtub as training apparatus, which is played and edited like a hot 'n' heavy sex scene, complete with orgasmic sound effects! Pristine, eye-popping camera-work by Peter Pau Tak-hei (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON).

Movie Review: Van Damme good,Rodman stop the torture...
Summary: 3 Stars

In 1997 Columbia Tristar released this highly anticipated action adventure thriller, starring action superstar Jean Claude Van Damme and his sidekick Dennis Rodman?Thats right Rodman was cast to support Van Damme.Excuse me did Rodman have any acting exposure before this tragedy, tragedy not on Van Dammes part but on Rodmans horrible acting skills.I actually enjoyed the action sequences that were in the film because they went on non stop and at full speed.Van Damme had showed better acting in some of his other films but this one wasn't horrible,it was good enough.
The supporting cast needed some help and I believe thats what made the film fail. The box-office hype eventually left theaters a little earlier than expected, but still the film was pretty good.

Movie Review: THE ACTING IS HORRIBLE
Summary: 3 Stars

This movie has been regarded by many as one of the worst ever made. While I wouldn't venture to say it's that bad, I have to agree that it's not academy award material. Van Damme and Rodman have one thing in common and that is a lack of acting skills. I can't stress enough that the acting in this film actually makes it comical and more fun to watch. However I gave the movie three stars because it delivered the action like it was supposed to. If you are a Van Damme fan and like action, check it out. If not, stay away.

Movie Review: The "No-Brainer" of all "No-Brainers"
Summary: 3 Stars

I know, I know, the script is horrid, as well as the acting. This movie may have one-liners taken straight out of a Bazooka Joe comic, but I just can help but be taken in with the action scenes. Tsui Hark is at his best here, (hes later at his worst with "Knock Off"). Call it a guilty pleasure, I guess. I still laugh with excitment when I watch the scene where Van-Damme runs into that Ninja in a hotel room.

Movie Review: Great Action but no plot!
Summary: 3 Stars

Well this is a pretty good movie when one considers the action sequences, but there is no plot!(Well practicaly)The ONLY reason to buy this one is for the ACTION!
