Movie Reviews of Doris Day TodayMovie Review: Memory Lane Summary: 4 Stars
The show's a little goofy, but so were the '70s. You'll fall in love with Doris before the program's end. John Denver fans, this is well worth the price, as Denver and Day have all kinds of cute business together. Lots of extras.
Movie Review: Good Entertainment Summary: 4 Stars
This is really good entertainment for those of us in our 50s and beyond. I would not recommend it for the younger folks since they are probably too young to appreciate this type of humor.
Movie Review: A Time Machine Summary: 3 Stars
If you didn't live in the 1970's you might watch this TV special and think that that was what television looked like in the 1970's, and you would be largely correct. Then, as now, there was mostly crap on TV with occasional bright spots. Most of the bright spots, as the flood of DVDs from that era suggest, are best remembered as opposed to revisited. This special is painful to watch. The stilted dialog and bad jokes, which are always followed by a cacophony of canned laughter, are just so bad. Doris' singing is also painful as she tries to be hip and now by singing "Day By Day," a tuneless faux rock song from the musical Godspell. John Denver had just moved from being a sincere folk singer in the mold of Tom Paxton, to being a Superstar pal of Frank Sinatra, a career path which eventually would cost Denver his credibility and send his recording career spiraling down. On this special he trades unfunny quips with Doris, but then, just when it seemed impossible for anything good to happen, he sings his oldie "Follow Me," as Doris Day sits cross-legged on the floor and lays on a marvelous harmony. This could have been a really great show, if they had just done away with the lame comedy and sung songs that were suited to them. Tim Conway does some pointless and uncharacteristically unfunny comedy with Doris. There are some other guests also. So, this is completely a waste of time. It was a waste in 1975 and it is a waste now, except, somehow, it is fun to watch. It is a little time machine into the era of President Ford; an America adjusting, uncomfortably, to a powerful youth culture and the presence of African Americans in the mainstream. CBS was still a colossus, operating as it had for decades. And Doris Day, one of the great movie stars a decade earlier, trying to stay relevant.
Movie Review: Too Short The Day Summary: 3 Stars
Well, first of all it goes without saying that despite the fact she was nearly 50 at the time this special was aired, Day looked absolutely terrific (what a figure that girl had) and sounded even better. The special isn't much different from dozens of others in the 1970s - long on not very funny comedy skits, interspersed with some songs and dance numbers. Of the latter, there are far too few, especially of Doris herself.
Doris Day was without a doubt a great, great singer, perhaps one of the very best of the 20th century. It's just too bad the TV producers didn't have the good sense to showcase this side of her in the special more. After all, this was one of the very last times the public would get the great privilege to enjoy new material from this most amazing woman and entertainer. However, a little Day is better than no Day at all and so I'm glad she chose to do the show and we have a record of it.
The special does make one thing perfectly clear, i.e., had she chosen to, Doris Day could have gone on recording and entertaining indefinitely without any significant falloff in quality. Her rendition of "The Way We Were" on the show is gorgeous in its heartfelt simplicity and lyrical delivery. I get a little melancholy every time I think of what might had been had she go on to made just a few more albums of such songs.
Movie Review: Love Doris, but stopped 20 min into movie Summary: 2 Stars
Why are my Doris Day DVD's not working free of problems? None of my other DVD's do this. I want to be sent another one of the last two that don't work. Please, can you help me?
