Movie Reviews of Doo Wop at 50Movie Review: Way beyond my expectations Summary: 5 Stars
The concert was absolutely top-shelf. Not only did the performers still have what it takes, some of them sounded better now than they did 40 years ago. I especially liked the "Skyliners", as "Since I don't Have You" has always been one of my favorite oldies. Other groups including the Flamingos, Spaniels, the Dell Vikings, the Passions, and many more, were outstanding. Another major ingredient in this super production was an orchestra made up of top notch musicians, including a string section and tympani drums. I don't know the name of the musician who played tenor sax, but he was fantastic. The video and audio quality is also superb. I have a large TV screen, but still appreciated viewing the DVD in full screen. Both the surround audio and picture quality was excellent. I also have Doo-Wop 51, which is another top-shelf performance.
Movie Review: Doo Wop at 50 2pk DVD Summary: 5 Stars
As several reviewers have stated, when I saw the PBS program, I had to have the DVD. I grew up with this music. So what if some of the voices have faded. After all they are at least 40 years older than when the recordings were first made. The camera work was outstanding and all the groups looked as if they were having fun as well as captivating the audience. Most of my favorite groups were there. The Marcells were great! As were the Cadillacs, Skyliners, and Jive 5. The Platters did a great job. We all know that Herb Reed is the only original, but he does a commendable job of keeping the sound alive. My 8 year old granddaughter is now a Doo Wop fan. I will buy the 51 concert when it is on DVD.
Movie Review: Just doesn't get any better than this! Summary: 5 Stars
This gathering of Doo Wop Greats is remarkable, these guys are all in their late 50's and sixties and they all sound very good! The Legends of Doo Wop stole the show! Jimmy Gallagher, Tony Passalacqua, Frank Mancuso and Steve Horn were Fantastic! One reviewer on here said Jimmy was painfully off key, Jimmy Gallagher off key??? I doubt it! I don't know what Doo Wop 50 you watched sir but the one I saw Jimmy, Frank, Tony and Steve were Amazingly Good, their performance is worth the price of the DVD alone. You can't go wrong buying Doo Wop 50! Doo Wop at it's finest!
Movie Review: What took them so long? Summary: 5 Stars
What is great about the DVD performance is that it captures the music essentially unchanged. They may have gotten older, but their voices are still - as the "Ice Man" would say -singing "tight harmonys." They ought to take this and Doo Wop 51 on the road. The music is outstanding! The only recomendation I would make is, since not all the singers are the originals such as Tony Williams of the Platters, it would be nice if they added a, "Where are they now" segment.
Movie Review: WOW !!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
If you grew up in the fifties, then this is for you. What a marvelous DVD. I have watched this over and over and still enjoy it just as much as the first time I saw the show on PBS. Rhino certainly did justice on this release. The picture and sound quality are simply GREAT. This is the next best thing to being there, maybe the first best thing, since you can watch over and over. and never grow tired of the performances.
