Movie Reviews of Don't Say a Word

Movie Review: Bean There, Doug Less
Summary: 4 Stars

I must confess that I went to see this movie only because my favorite actor,Sean Bean, had a starring role. That being the main attraction, I was not disappointed in what he brought to the role of a bad guy who always seemed to be two or three moves ahead of "nice" guy, Michael Douglas. It was worth the price of admission just to hear Bean's ruthless, mocking voice with just enough velvet in it to make you wonder if he really was all that evil. The atmosphere of the setting,New York City, was gray and murky--almost as if the movie, made long before 9/11,had sensed the mood most of us moviegoers were feeling about that city. But despite this gloom, the tangled web of mystery involving the missing information sought by jewel thief and kidnapper Bean from psychiatrist Douglas' patient kept it interesting. There were times, however, when I felt that the development of the storyline depended too much on electronic eavesdropping equipment and cell phones.(In this information age, were we really supposed to be surprised at the technology Bean had planted in Douglas' apartment in order to see and hear what went on after he had kidnapped Douglas' daughter?) When Sean Bean and Michael Douglas finally do meet face-to face, there are enough "fireworks" to light up even the dead-of-night in that potter's field. That made me wish that there had been more such "sparklers" thoughout "Don't Say A Word".

Movie Review: Don't Say A Word When a 1000 Flashbacks Will Do!
Summary: 4 Stars

Michael Douglas' new thriller may not be the most suspenceful film of the year but definitely is an exciting diversion using all the standard suspence/thriller components. Brittany Murphy plays a teen with blocked memory terrified by watching her father killed by thugs he betrayed. Murphy deserves an Oscar nomination for her emotional range of vulnerability. She makes the viewer care about what is happening/has happened to her, more than Famke Janssen as the broken legged wife/mother or Jennifer Esposito as the homicide detective one step behind. Douglas's Conrad, moves the father from frustration and panic at his daughter's kidnapping to resourceful bravado in face of the menacing thugs. The plot twists and moves like a wild roller coaster but like the ride ends up neat and tidy with good triumphing. The background unfolds thru multiple flashbacks in bright color contrasted with the glooming green of the mental hospital or the eerie blue of the denouement. The sheer quantity of the flashbacks and quick cuts back and forth were some aid to suspence but eventually became distracting. The NY Times Reviewer, Green, notes that NYers cheered when the NY skyline including the Trade Center was shown. In Phoenix, there were no cheers but I sensed an emotional wave run thru the audience, at least this viewer.

Movie Review: 3 for the movie....5 (out of 5) to Brittany Murphy...
Summary: 4 Stars

I give the movie itself 3 stars. A group of men kidnap a (psych.) doctor's child, and holds her until the doc (Douglas) can reach another young lady named Elizabeth who is currently under care in a secure ward in a hospital. This young lady, when she was a little girl, witnessed her father die. The men are looking for a number that has the location of a high priced gem. This young lady appears to be the only person that knows this number. Elisabeth (played by Brittnay Murphy) will not disclose this number to ANYONE!!

Along comes the father (Douglas) of the missing and kidnapped kid, he tries to reach out to Elizabeth to get the number for the mere purpose of getting his kid back. Low and behold Elisabeth manages to find a connection with the doctor but still is reluctant to tell a soul.

A movie of good guys, bad guys-run of the mill story.

I gave the movie a an overall rating of 4. 3 stars for the movie itself but 5 out of 5 stars to Brittany Murphy for her excellent performance of an insane, lost in her own world, role!! Her acting, in the movie, is what made me stay tuned into it.

And I say over all, it's not a bad movie to rent. Just not one of the best either!!

Movie Review: Don't Say A Word
Summary: 4 Stars

I found this movie to have an interesting and compelling story. With lead actors such as Michael Douglas and Sean Bean, you should be able to make a fairly decent movie. That is what this movie is, fairly decent. So many scenes in the movie smack of other movies, that you may find yourself feeling a great sense of déjà vu' all the way through the movie. While this movie seems to smack of unoriginality, it is still worth watching.

The premise: MINOR SPOILER

Michael Douglas plays a wealthy psychologist who is called in by his friend who works at the New York City loony bin. His friend introduces him to a young girl who, by all appearances, is catatonic. He gets her to open up a little bit, but leaves to go home. He goes home to his beautiful wife, played by Famke Janssen, and his daughter. When he gets up the next day, prepared to spend Thanksgiving day with his family, he finds that his daughter is missing. What follows, is a rather decent movie about a family man who is faced with his worst nightmare.
