Movie Reviews of Don't Come KnockingMovie Review: Where Is Howard, Who Is Howard - And Do I Care ? Summary: 3 Stars
When a Jessica Lange film come to town, it's time to venture out to one's nearest cinema to see it. She's a great talent, who in this film is surrounded by other fine talented actors, especially Tim Roth who versatility in movies is well known, and Sam Shepherd who is always an interesting actor on screen, plus the memorable Eva Marie Saint, a co-star of Brando in On The Waterfront all those years ago, plus co-starring with the like of screen giants Motgomery Clift,Paul Newman and Cary Grant.
The point of all this is that I'd hoped that such a lineup would ensure a good movie, but a flawed script and some indifferent direction put pay to this dream.
This is a story about a washed up actor who is finding his life pointless,(just as I found it pretty pointless)lol.
He drops in on a mother he hasn't seen for decades, after abruptly leaving a movie set in which he was playing the lead, thus abandoning the company trying to make a movie, then he sets off to find a son he has never met, meeting the young man's mother again after so long, and then discovering a waif like young woman trailing around after him (with her mother's ashes)is really his daughter from another union.
In the end he is carted off in handcuffs by Tim Roth's character who can't really explain why he has the authority to do this (he's not a cop or any sort law enforcement person)back to the movie location to complete the film.
He has no plans to visit Mum again, has no relationship with son or daughter, and seemingly we've spent 90 mins plus watching a stagnant film that hasn't moved one inch since the first bit of dialogue in reel 1.
Redeeming features were the wonderful camera work and lighting that was
prevalent throughout the picture, the contributions of Lange and Saint in particular, the offbeat humour and the soundtrack - the details of which I'd love to share with you, but unfortunately the end credits were done in miniscule print unreadable except perhaps with the aid of a telescope, racing along at a speed fit to kill.
Movie Review: Paris, Texas it isn't! Summary: 3 Stars
From the director who gave us "Wings of Desire" and Paris, Texas comes this very self-indulgent shallow tale.
The "look" of the film is great (Butte, MT never looked so good) but the camera "round de round" shots (via Brian De Palma ad naseum) makes one sick after just a few minutes and completely ruins whatever little story there is to tell here. I really wanted to like this film, but could not - what an absolute waste of talent and energy.
Movie Review: The New West Summary: 3 Stars
I'd buy this movie just to soak up the amazing camera shots. At times visually captivating; you'll really want a big screen to appreciate this one. The only thing that kept me from giving this four stars was the lack of depth to the story's finish. Tim Roth was a hoot. Jessica Lange had the most interesting character and a little more from her might've tightened up the ending.
Movie Review: I wanted to like it . . . . Summary: 2 Stars
So much talent, such spectacular scenery, and yet, this film put me to sleep like a horse tranquilizer. What the filmmakers apparently intended to portray as a father/son reunion brimming with angst, longing, anger, and regret, just didn't engage me. Period. The dialogue felt totally stale. Some of the scenes seemed interminable. The only refreshing character was Sam Shepard's mother, who reminded me a lot of the plucky widows I have met out in Nevada. Full disclosure: I turned it off about four fifths of the way through -- just couldn't keep my eyes open.
Movie Review: Boring, Boring, Boring !!! Summary: 1 Stars
I love Sam Shepard. But I hated this film. It really had a lot of potential, and the story was basically good, but the way the movie was put together was terrible. I kept waiting for something memorable to happen, but it just never did. This movie was sort of like watching the pilot of a new TV series -- you know, where the viewer is just getting some background information about what's going on, and where the characters don't seem quite comfortable with one another yet. The film tried to be artsy but fell way short. The mention of Sundance and Cannes on the box caught my interest, but I should have remembered that those highbrow endorsements mean absolutely nothing to the average filmgoer like me, who is just looking for entertainment. This movie was not entertaining in the least.
