Movie Reviews of Donovan's Reef

Movie Review: Classic John Wayne
Summary: 5 Stars

If you like John Wayne and Lee Marvin, then you'll enjoy the two of them together in this South Sea Island story. The prim and proper New England daughter of the island doctor comes for a visit while the doctor is on another island. John Wayne pretends that the doctor's half Polynesian children are his own causing clashes and comedy and leading to romance. In the meantime, Lee Marvin is an old Navy buddy of John Wayne's and comes to the island to take the bar (Donovan's Reef) away from John. Fights, misunderstandings, and romance make for a good John Wayne movie.

Movie Review: Run aground on Donovan's Reef
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie was a real change of pace for John Wayne. Another collaboration between John Wayne and John Ford, this is a comedy set in the south Pacific Ocean. This is more of a story of the characters than one of action. There are fine performances all around from Wayne, Lee Marvin and Elizabeth Allen. Look for some excellent supporting work from Cesar Romero, Dorothy LaMour and Jack Warden. If you want a movie with some laughs, beautiful scenery and of course a brawl or two, get this movie.

Movie Review: John Wayne John Ford majic
Summary: 5 Stars

Once again, John Wayne teams up with John Ford's great american direction, showing the realistic lives of people, whether from Polynesia or america. Along with an all star cast it is a light hearted potrayal of Lives shortly after WW II in the eastern islands, while also addressing the racism of the era.

The cinematography and sound track is breath taking while it tugs at your heart. I have had this on VHS for decades, but the DVD is much more of a high quality.

Movie Review: Donovan's Reef
Summary: 5 Stars

Great performances by John Wayne and Lee Marvin. One of the best barroom brawls ever in a movie. I love this movie. It's funny, romantic, boisterous, and poignant. The locaction doesn't hurt, either. One of my two all-time favorite John Wayne movies, the other being "Eldorado." And who knew Lee Marvin could be so funny? He was great in this, in fact, in my opinion he almost stole the show. Well worth a couple of hours of your time.

Movie Review: John WAYNE
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are a John Wayne fan this is a must have. It is so cute and filmed on the beautiful Island of Kauai, Hawaii.

Also if you are a Lee Marvin fan because it is a part that is not his usual character and it is funny.

It is my third favorite John Wayne movie behind El Dorado and In Harm's Way.

I find great pleasure in watching these three movies again and again.
