Movie Reviews of Don Juan DeMarcoMovie Review: Nobody does wonderful and quirky better than Johnny Depp! Summary: 5 Stars
This glorious and enchanting film is one of my favorites. Johnny Depp is contagious as the mental patient who convinces everyone with latent, romantic hearts, that he is indeed Don Juan de Marco, the greatest lover who ever lived. I love Johnny Depp in offbeat roles. In spite of all the controversy he has incurred over the years, he still captures my heart, especially when he plays roles like Don Juan and the Charlie Chaplin copy cat in Benny and Joon. I always thought he would have been sensational in the movie, Chaplin. Marlon Brando is also superb as the rotund, tired psychiatrist whom Don Juan, the patient, rescues from mediocrity. Faye Dunnaway is beautiful as his pragmatic, middle-aged wife. Together, they recapture the spirit of youth and demonstrate that regardless of advancing age, fun, sex appeal, and energy don't have to be wasted on the young. If you love adventure, passion, and joy, don't miss this alluring, little gem!
Movie Review: Great movie on how to regain love in life Summary: 5 Stars
The underline of this movie is great and gives room for thought. Johnny Deep plays the character of Don Juan, the 'greatest lover in the world' in whoms arms a woman 'has never been left unsatisfed'. Tired of his mundane, boring life in New York, he creates a life of imagination and passion which is long dead in the majority of people's lives. Brando plays the psychiatrist who is to 'cure' Depp of this love and passion, considering this a sickness in the beginning, rather than the sickness of his own monotonous and mundane existance. The psychiatrist becomes the actual patient, and 'Don' teaches him how to gain passion back into his own world and marriage. Brando sets-up a plot which will please the board of psyhiatrists and encourage them to release Don Juan-Depp from the rehabilitation program that is to make Juan just as 'normal' as everyone else. Ultimately, the movie conveys, life becomes what we make out of it.
Movie Review: Sweet and romantic Summary: 5 Stars
Johnny Depp is bee-yoo-tee-ful. As the self-styled Don Juan DeMarco, one glance from those deep brown eyes can turn you into melted butter while you're sitting on your sofa. But Marlon Brando and Faye Dunaway (as the middle-aged Dr. and Mrs. Mickler) are beautiful too. "Don Juan" and the good doctor influence each other's lives in very positive ways, and if you can watch the glowing delight of Mrs. Mickler as her husband of 32 years suprises her with high romance in a posh restaurant without getting tears in your eyes, you're a stronger person than I am. I loved the gentle humor of this story and the romances of young and old. This is a happy, goofy little sweetheart of a movie and I give it 5 stars. (My husband of thirteen years gives it three stars because by the time the credits rolled on the television screen, I was sitting on his lap with my arms around his neck.)
Movie Review: Light, quirky and fun Summary: 5 Stars
The beautiful Johnny Depp as an equally beautiful mental patient proves that romance is infectious even to Marlon Brando's burned out therapist. Brando's character, Dr. Mickler, is about to retire after years of service in an institution. He is tired of the system and ambivalent about his upcoming retirement. In comes Depp, as a young Don Juan, who is committed after an apparent suicide attempt. During his quest to find out who the young man really is, Dr. Mickler finds a little magic of his own and sees what it means to really influence others in a positive way. He DOES in the end find out who the mysterious Don Juan really is, and he is just who he claims to be, with a twist. I thoroughly have enjoyed this movie. It's light and positive and has a great ending. Brando and Dunaway play their characters well and Depp is his usual sublime self.
Movie Review: Glorious Summary: 5 Stars
Anyone who is not pleased by this picture, surely does not have the heart of a lover. This film is like a flaming dagger of passion stuck into the heart of the drear, sardonic, failure that is the 90s. ... Strange thing--the movie would work very differently if Juan and his amores were not played by such beautiful people--but who cares, it works the way it works. Brando redeems whatever failures he accumulated over the years with a masterful and funny performance as Don Octavio. Depp is at the peak of modern acting--not necessarily because of this movie, but because he has the range to pull off both roles like Don Juan and the paranoid, sexless Hunter Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. He has that charm which, because it cannot be described or dissected or analyzed, truly is charm.
