Movie Reviews of Don Juan DeMarco

Movie Review: there are many who do not share my views
Summary: 5 Stars

If i remember correctly, about halfway through the film, Don Juan acknowledges that many do not share his views about women. He, believes all women are beautiful, but he says that many do not see it that way, that they will point out how one womans nose is too large, perhaps a seconds hips are too wide. valid points?, perhaps? but as he goes on to say, all his women are beautiful because they are unperfect. This film speaks a great deal about life. It is not meant to reflect reality by having plausible scenes. It is not meant to be a documentary. It is a story of imagination, a beautiful make believe romance that looks at love. perhaps a film like this should be a cartoon, maybe then we can end our attempts to distinguish between what can and cannot be. I see what francis ford coppola meant to show us and its simple to decipher as soon as you start paying attention. an example of this is seen towards the end of the movie where marlon brandos character is finishing off by telling us about Don Juans fate. He tells us in so many words... Was Don Juan able to reunite with his beloved, who he thought he had forever lost? and brando says, "Why not", and immediately you see them reuniting. imagination and reality can be the same, as soon as you imagine that it is. oh and by the way, i do recommend this film.

Movie Review: Don Juan DeMarco
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't like Johnny Depp. Have never felt he was truly a good actor and was too blown up by media hype and a lot of mindless teeny-bopper infatuation. I have changed my mind, at least for this movie. Depp does an outstanding job of showing us the inner workings of a man who has the sensibilities necessary to woo women ...no matter their age or culture. He shows us lessons we men all need to learn if we are to successfully love the women who come into our lives. To reach into a woman's soul with love and tenderness, insight into their wants and desires...their needs: this is the epitomy of a succesful love affair, whether it be with a new-found love or your long-married wife. It is also the ultimate failing of most of us men. We don't remember what we saw in our loves which attracted us to them in the first place, and we forget to continually woo them as we should and as they need.
Marlon Brando, as the worn-out , over-weight, and work-weary psychiatrist Dr. Jack Mickler, is a perfect foil to Depp's off the wall character. The interaction between the two and subsequent rebirth of real interest in life and love in Mickler is the real story for us. If we learn the truths taught by DeMarco, we all benefit.

Movie Review: The best romance movie of all time
Summary: 5 Stars

Compared to movies like You've Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, Notting Hill, My Best Friend's Wedding, and As Good As It Gets, Don Juan DeMarco is the only one that explores the true meaning and great depth of both emotional and physical love. For instance, in You've Got Mail and As Good As It Gets, the magic behind those films is how they make you feel excited about the chase of romance and how they make you feel heart swepted when the man finally wins over the woman with his dazzling and sometimes eccentric charm. Needless to say, those two are great date movies. But if you want a great romance movie, buy this dvd. Because Don Juan Demarco appeals to the ideal of love and probes you for its true meaning. In the movie, Don Juan tells Don Octavio De Flores the four questions of value in life: What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same. Only great love. With uplifting and transcending words like these and a great musical score that will make you want to ball room dance as you watch it, there is absolutely no doubt that this the best romance movie ever made. Buy it. I guarantee that you won't be disappointed.

Movie Review: A Magical Story of Love
Summary: 5 Stars

Don Juan de Marco is a marvelous story overflowing with love and passion. If you consider youself a romantic or a fan of Johnny Depp, you simply MUST see this movie.

Johnny Depp's performance as Don Juan is absolutely captivating. His deep Spanish accent will sober almost anyone...I could listen to his voice all day long. Marlon Brando, as Don Juan's psychiatrist, becomes completely entranced by Don Juan de Marco and his story of his life. Who wouldn't? Don Juan spent his life wooing women. But it isn't just his suaveness or his gorgeous face; there is an aura about him, something that makes everyone around him aware of how sensitive and sensual a man he is. As time goes on, Don Juan and his romanticism begin to have an effect on his psychiatrist, Dr. Mickler, who Don Juan believes is Don Octavio de Flores (a romantic like himself). Dr. Mickler eventually realizes that he really IS Don Octavio, and he falls in love with his wife (Faye Dunaway) all over again.

Marlon Brando and Johnny Depp are absolutely magical together on screen. This movie gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "love story." It will literally make you want to go out and fall in love.

Movie Review: "There are only four questions worth asking in this life...
Summary: 5 Stars

"There are only four questions worth asking in this life...," says Don Juan. "And the answer to all four questions is the same...Love" (you'll need to see the movie to hear the questions...but I'll bet if you make up your own questions, the answer to all of them will be the same).

Without love, all else is just a banging bell.

I don't use the word, "inspired," lightly; but, this movie inspired me and for that I'm grateful and occasionally re-watch it.

As a physician, I'm aware of the masks that healers often wear (as Brando describes in this movie) and the way a patient can inspire a physician to remove his/her mask and find what's real.

So, I find the mask analogy helpful for me as a physician.

I also consider the first scene (where the woman succumbs in the restaurant) to be one of hottest G rated seductions scenes ever filmed. It takes much skill to turn up the heat without taking off the clothes and while using words that a first grader could hear without blushing (but an adult woman will hear and flush and sweat). Great display of the art of seduction.

Worth watching more than once.
