Movie Reviews of Don Juan DeMarcoMovie Review: Don Juan Demarco Summary: 5 Stars
"Don Juan Demarco" isn't a masterpiece and it's not bound to top a viewers Favorite Movies list...But it is a fun and enjoyable little movie that you can get for 5 bucks at your neighborhood Wal-Mart. The movie has a great cast with Oscar nominee Johnny Depp (Best Actor, 'Finding Neverland') and Oscar winners Marlon Brando (Best Actor, 'The Godfather') and Faye Dunaway (Best Actress, 'Network'). The movie opens with a man claiming to be Don Juan Demarco (Depp, of course), the world's greatest lover. He explains to us that he has had over a thousand women and the only one that rejected him is the only one that mattered. In that respect, he is going to kill himself...But not after one last conquest. After we watch Don Juan work his magic, we see him next atop a billboard and about to jump off. His suicide is brought to a halt when a psychiatrist named Jack Mickler (Brando) intervenes and then takes Don Juan to his care facility. The nurses are immediately smitten with the man, while most of the doctors fear treating him. After Jack begins treating Don Juan, we learn more about Don Juan's background and watch as he helps Jack rekindle his love with his wife Marilyn (Dunaway). Johnny Depp is perfectly cast as Don Juan; He's a charming actor that can play anyone, but this role is perfect for him. He plays it with the same charisma and flamboyancy that he later would lend to Captain Jack Sparrow.
Marlon Brando doesn't seem like the kind of person who would take a role like this unless he was in need of money, but he's actually quite good as well. Dunaway (who I hadn't seen in a movie made past the 70s) looks beautiful...
This is also the nicest character I think I've seen her play (the only other films I've seen with her in it were Network and Chinatown). One of the big things that make this film so good is that by the end of the film, you don't really care if Don Juan really is Don Juan. Some films are incapable of giving you that mindset, but this film pulls it off. As I said, it's no cinematic masterpiece but it's one of those movies that Saturday nights were tailor-made for.

Movie Review: A hot one for ladies and a lesson for men Summary: 5 Stars
I KNOW!!!....5 stars?....that seems generous for a little known dark movie. Ladies, hold on to your bloomers and gentlemen, take note....if your knees don't buckle, or you don't have an "ah ha" moment when you watch this film, it's time to reevaluate your passion position in life. Watch it once for the pure romance and smouldering hot sensuality. Watch it another time for taking notes....so you can read them again...on a full mooned night, cozied in front of the fire...with a glass of whatever....until you lover returns from wherever...
This movie is not only hot because of Depp and Brando, the storyline and dialogue are excellent. It may have been tagged as a chick flick when it came out so I didn't bother to see it then, even though I am a chick. It was just last year, 2010, when I finally saw it and was overwhelmed and overcome with awe and romanticism. There is much to be felt and learned from this little lost video gem. On a therapeutic level, Brando is an interesting character who, in his latter years is revealing of the inner conflicts, and confusion that facing retirement brings. The wonder of who one is and what one will be and, mostly asking the question "Is that all there is?" comes to light in his character and performance.
Depp plays the handsome, over the top lover...no surprise, but the nice twist is that he awakens soulful romance with his provacative, sensual outlook. His deep belief in his character, meaning his character's belief in his character (you'll see what I mean), is not only convincing, but in a strange way, awakening. From the intense romanticism of Depp's Don Juan to the psychological revelations of Brando's Dr. Jack Mickler, there is something for everyone on many levels in this movie.
As Johnny Don Juan says..."There are only four questions in life. What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same: Only Love.
Ciao!
Movie Review: Why mess with love? Summary: 5 Stars
It's hard for me to even begin to describe how this movie made me feel. First of all, I got it as a gift from my boyfriend and I knew he'd really liked it so I was looking forward to watching it. That story sucked me in really fast! It's a very nice feeling to see movies still made that actually porttray love as fragile, precious and something to aspire of instead of something to scoff at like some modern "romance" movies would have us, reasonably smart people, think. Here the premise seems so impossible that the story takes advantage of eevryone's initial disbelief.Johnny Depp's performance as Don Juan de Marco, the world's greatest lover is utterly golden. That alone would be enough to make watching this movie worthwhile. It's so great because it takes everyone in (including the rest of the characters) as mere unbelieving human nature (and we are, most of the time, we gotta admit it) and throughout the story has us doubting whether he might or might not be who he says he is. Not only that, he has us believing in love by the end of the movie, truly believing. The love between Marlon Brando and Faye Dunaway is priceless and only increased and cherished by every viewer as the movie goes on and still after it's long since finished. Ok, so it's not likely to happen in real life anytime soon that you'll encounter the world's greatest lover (or that he'll look as cute as Mr. Depp) but it did do something for my beliefs about love. You work at it years and years to nurture it and make it grow, you treasure it and as Mr. Brando does with Johnny, you leave well enough alone, love is too beautiful to mess with it. You "get" love, that's what it truly is about. Great performances, wonderful story...see it now!
Movie Review: Depp Is Absolutely Exquisite In This!!--Brando and Dunaway Are Great Too! Summary: 5 Stars
It's not a secret that I am a HUGE fan of Johnny Depp's body of work!
The guy just has an aura around him that draws you in and holds you
when he comes on the screen!--Nobody in the last 20 yrs has such a
diversity and consistently high quality level of excellence in their
work than Johnny Depp, with the exceptions of maybe Sean Penn or Brad Pitt...
But even then, nobody has merged the artistic with the commericially sucessful
as well as he has...BAR NONE!! (Okay, enough J.D. gushing!!)
This movie is a great romantic comedy that will have you all wrapped up
into it in no time! I hadn't seen this in about 9 yrs and put it on
this past weekend when there was nothing on...WOW!! (-:
Johnny Depp plays a guy who really thinks he's the legendary lover Don Juan Demarco!
He adopts a fake accent as well as all the affectations of the chivalrous rogue
and his sex appeal, smoldering looks and charm take it to another level!
He is sent to a therapist, played admirably by the legendary Marlon Brando,
who tries to help him find out who he is, but in the process, it is
Depp's character who helps to open Brando's character and well as
Faye Dunaway's character (which she plays admirably as well) to
an unexpected level of sensitivity, sensuality and a beautiful
view of the world and life that they'd never thought of!
This is not a dirty, in-your-face kind of hit the sack flick!
It's a very romantic, funny and sensual approach that will have
you feeling great about love and life at the end!
Yet another great Johnny Depp film to add to your collection.
Movie Review: A Delightful Film Summary: 5 Stars
Don Juan Demarco certainly is not one of Johnny Depp's better roles but I cannot think of anyone who could have played his mental patient who believes he is (and actually is) the world's greatest lover. The film is a romantic comedy revolving around the overwhelming romantic effect Don Juan Demarco has just simply being around women and on his doctor (Jack Mickler played by Marlon Brando). As Don Juan relates his fantasy-like life and romantic awakening he influences his doctor to romance his wife, played by Faye Dunaway. It may be a bit of a stretch to see Marlon Brando as romantic at a weight of 300 plus pounds but there is a playful chemistry between Dunaway and Brando that is charming. The story of Don Juan's life is fantastic, including his duel with the father of the woman he has fallen in love with, being sold into slavery to a Sultana and living in a harem surrounded by women. What tension there is in the film centers on if Don Juan will be committed or released before his 10 days of observation lapse. In this, Dr. Mickler is certain that he will be released but faces opposition from all of the other staff doctors who would prefer to see Don Juan on medication.
The supporting cast turns in fine performances and includes Rachel Ticotin as Don Juan's mother. Overall this is a feel-good and entertaining film with some very good performances, and for that reason I am giving it 5 stars. I saw part of the movie on a cable channel and became caught up in the story enough to want to have a copy.
