Movie Reviews of Domestic DisturbanceMovie Review: Unoriginal, Short, Predicatble..But Overall Entertaining Summary: 3 Stars
This is the type of movie that should have been made for Lifetime. The Plot is so simple that there is not one single thing that you could miss. It's like "Stepfather for Dummies". If it weren't for Travolta this movie would not have made it to theaters, it would have gone straight for the tube.
The plot of this so called "quintessential thriller" is of a boy witnessing his stepfather killing a man. No one believers the kid, he always lies, so it's hard to keep track of his truths. But surprisingly he doesn't lie to Daddy Travolta. The only one who believes him is the boy's Father, he will go as far as he can to investigate and find correlative proof that the man living with his son did in fact kill this man.
The plot as you can see is very unoriginal and cliché, it's just not that bright. That doesn't mean however that it isn't unwatchable. The Film is entertaining and logical...it's just too simplified. The thrills are there. But we have seen them so many times before. The acting is ok, the setting and cinematography are all top- notch. The movie would have been better if a little mystery were added into the formula. This is technically speaking "a family thriller"...for 13 and up its fine, it teaches a lesson on who to trust, and who to bring home. But more than anything...it's all pretty obvious and predictable, a rental, not a buy.
MY PERSONAL RATING: 2 ½ OUT OF 5
Movie Review: it wasn't terrible, just formulaic Summary: 3 Stars
There's nothing that pisses me off more in a movie than when someone fails to put up an adequate argument on their behalf when they're being accused of something.
It's like they either have the character act like a total maniac by flying off the handle when denying what they're being accused of (so obviously the other party will of course not believe them now), or they say the completely wrong things and understate their case, and it is extremely frustrating to watch because you're just sitting there screaming, "WHY DON'T YOU JUST SAY THIS!!"
When that kid was in the interrogation room, his best method of convincing people that a murder took place was by weakly repeating: "look, I know what I saw OK.." Yeah that's gonna convince people. I don't care if you're 12, that's not the way you argue with people, and it's unrealistic.
The other thing that was silly was how the kid and the mother was STILL in the car by the time the father called her cell phone. They should've been gone by then, there was no logical reason why they would've still been in that garage, other than the fact the movie called for them to be there so the stepfather could catch them.
Come on be intelligent when you write, justify your damn script.
Movie Review: Some good moments, but could have been better Summary: 3 Stars
John Travolta is convincing as a good father, who is trying to be accepting of his son's new stepfather, Vince Vaughn...and Vaughn is frighteningly real as a sociopath. Steve Buscemi once again does a good job as an individual with questionable character; and Teri Polo continues to raise her acting stock since her star role in "Meet the Parents."The tense moments where Vaughn and Travolta control the action are well-designed. However, these moments seem a bit contrived at times, and complex situations are resolved too easily. A truly good thriller will take the audience through a number of intertwined events that are not easily solved. Much of the storyline in this film is one-dimensional, and great actors also come across as one-dimensional when they have a weak script to work with. Also, this movie clocks in at less than 90 minutes, so character and plot development don't get the fair amount of time they need for a truly strong movie. Still, some good thrills are found in this movie, and it's a good flick for a rainy day when you aren't looking to think too hard about what you are watching. However, spend your hard-earned money on the matinee bargain price.
Movie Review: 2.5 stars Summary: 3 Stars
Frank Morrison (Travolta) is a divorced man who builds boats for a living. He lives in the same small town as his exwife (Polo) and his son Jason (Lashly). His ex is about to get married to wealthy Rick Barnes (Vaughn), even if Jason doesn't really care for him.As it turns out, the kid's suspicions are proven true when he sees how Barnes murders Ray Coleman (Buscemi) an `old friend' of his who showed up at the wedding. He runs away and tells the police, but there's no proof of the crime. Should Frank believe his son who has never lied to him or has he gone too far this time? Is Barnes really a murderer or not? What should have been a decent thriller ends up as a very uneffective movie. We never really care for Travolta's character and the outcome of the film is pretty much by-the-book predictable. Vaughn does a decent villain, but there are no surprises, no great speeches or scenes worthy of remembering. This is one of those films you forget the minute you leave the theater (or turn off the DVD player). Worthy only as a rental when there's nothing else you haven't seen. If you ask me...
Movie Review: Stepfather Villain Part XII Summary: 3 Stars
I feel sorry for stepparents. It seems that they are used way too often in films as the villains. This is another one of those. A 12-year-old boy's divorced mother (Teri Polo) remarries the owner of the town's brickworks (Vince Vaughn, once again playing the "Psycho"). The town thinks he is the greatest (as we are told in far-from-subtle scenes, including one presentation of an award from the Chamber of Commerce), so when the boy sees him kill someone, no one believes him except his poor boatbuilder father (John Travolta, once again playing the noble character--we know this because his first scene involves his selling of a boat below cost, the filmmakers make sure to spell out everything for us). The main reason for his not being believed however is that he lies (which we are told in no uncertain terms at least twice. Despite this being not the most intelligent film, I was able to enjoy myself. It has tension in all the right places and good acting all around.
