Movie Reviews of Dogma (Special Edition)

Movie Review: ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS
Summary: 5 Stars

If the use of any vulgar language bothers you, this is not the movie for you. If poking fun at religious dogma where religion-(not just Catholicism)-cannot defend itself, this is not the movie for you.

However, if you are open-minded enough to realize and accept that all points of view have merit, and can just enjoy a damn funny movie for its own sake, then this is definitely the movie for you!

The opening credits advise you to not take the movie seriously and it is your own fault if you do. This movie is crass, profane, and disturbing. It is thought provoking and deeper than it first seems. It is also one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Some people may see this movie and think Kevin Smith & Company are ridiculing people of faith, if not faith itself. I think nothing could be further from the truth. This movie has the message that God does exist. In what form does God exist? Well that is the question. No religion is more right on than the next. The fundamentalists of every faith would definitely disagree.

There is no one "right religion." But to use a line from Inherit the Wind: "Right" has no meaning whatsoever. But "truth" has meaning as a direction.

I am religious and I thought this movie was fantastic!

Movie Review: Beautifully mixes comedy and action!
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all, I have to say that I'm a big Kevin Smith fan. There isn't a movie of his that I dislike. But before I knew anything about Jay and Silent Bob and the whole viewaskewniverse, I bought this movie.

I watched it mostly because it starred Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and had an unusual story. I am a huge fan of movies that everyone considers bizzare or out-there and this film fits perfectly.

I'm going to skip the story assuming you already know most of it, and get to my review:
Yes this movie is full of cuss words. Yes it's bloody. But No: I don't think this is in any way "anti God."

Kevin didn't make this to cross God out, he made it to spread the word of God...only using crude humor.

What really stands out about this movie, is that it knows when to seperate the comedy and the action. Plus, it makes you think and "answers" many questions of the Bible.

Great performances and lots of laughs from the famous Jay and SIlent Bob. However, I have something to say to all those "squirmers" out there: this movie contains many long scenes of dialogue, and may be considered boring to some viewers. But don't let that scare you away. Even if you don't know who Kevin Smith is, see this movie!

Movie Review: Wow. There must be a God if this movie got made.
Summary: 5 Stars

How can you not like Kevin Smith? Smart, funny, irreverent, but above all, genius. This movie's proof. Plot summaries tend to abound in reviews of movies (even their DVD-released versions), so here's what matters: Smith is a god. A low-level deity, to be certain, but significantly improved over the average human being that hears about his movies and then protests them without taking the time to understand what they're complaining about. Yes, it does take the Catholic church down a few notches. But it deserves to be. If people should stop selling stuff that's offensive, then, guess what? The Bible should stop being published.
But that's just me trying to defend a good movie. With the second-best big name cast Smith has ever assembled (behind J&SBSB, and since Clerks had no big names, it doesn't count for this), the comic romp from Illinois to New Jersey starts off funny, and ends funny ("We can have sex up until the third trimester."). So maybe he can't set up a shot. So what? The writing and the acting are what make this movie. Once again, get smart (and get a sense of humor while you're at it) before seeing this movie. It's humorous and thought-provoking at the same time. And it has George Carlin as a Catholic cardinal.

Movie Review: Thought provoking and laugh inducing
Summary: 5 Stars

Despite the anti-catholic/anti-religion hype, this film is definitely worth watching, whatever your beliefs. I mean let's face it, most stand ups take the mick out of God, and tell all about their beliefs, and how many people make a fuss about that? Anyone who finds serious offense at the religious stuff in this film really shouldn't be watching it in the first place. <If you haven't seen it yet, please do so.> And if you're offended by anything else, (Jay's swearing did get a bit O.T.T. I thought.) well, just don't watch it again. The second DVD in this pack is certainly worth checking out, outtakes, cast info, blatant advertising of Jay & Bob merchandise, and more deleted footage than comprised the final film, (Several are extended versions of scenes from the film) one scene in particular, where we find out a bit more about Bethany's character, is particularly moving. Much of the extra footage was included in the Dogma Screenplay, so if you've read this, you'll know pretty much what to expect. Some people might think it a shame that none of the cut footage was put back into the film as a sort of 'Director's cut', but as Kevin Smith points out, he didn't really want a three and a half hour movie.

Movie Review: Religious satire at its best
Summary: 5 Stars

Few films have upset the religious community as much as Dogma, and probably none have so little to cause such a reaction. Obviously crafted by someone who knows a lot about Catholic tradition (and dogma, as it were), Dogma has far more in support of God and religion than anything else.

As a DVD, the Dogma SE is quite well done, with menus that reflect the cheesy marketing as evidenced by the "Buddy Christ" in the film. Also of note is the "religious fanatic" who says something when a menu is selected. The commentary is quite funny (esp. the blatant and shameless attempts by Smith to promote Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash), although the video portions are pretty dull, except for revealing that Jason Mewes was completely intoxicated when recording it. The cut sections, however, are where the DVD truly shines. Framed by explanations from Smith, these scenes truly enhance the experience, provided you really liked the movie (which, of course, is the only reason you should buy deluxe editions like this). My only complaint is that the "Hosties" animatics promised throughout the various commentaries is not at all present. Otherwise, it's the perfect DVD for fans of this movie, or Kevin Smith's "View Askewiverse".
