Movie Reviews of Dog SoldiersMovie Review: Canine Freedom Fighters; I Do Love a Dog in Uniform! Summary: 5 Stars
Clearly, I am misrepresenting this film. There are no actual "dog soldiers" in uniform. Heck there are only a couple of dogs in the entire movie. What we do get in this film is a squad of Her Majesties finest soldiers going toe to toe with a family of Lycanthropes; Werewolves that is. Before I get into the details I feel that I need to qualify why this is my favorite Werewolf film to date:
1. Zulu is my favorite war film.
2. These are really cool looking werewolves.
I'm sure everybody gets number 2. If you're not familiar with number 1 then I highly suggest you Google "Rorkes Drift" to familiarize yourself with the story portrayed in Zulu. To make it brief, it was a famous "Desperate Last Stand" battle that is often referenced in this film. Regardless, these two things combined to make one of the more exciting, well executed action/horror films I've ever seen. Let's tear into the details...
-HI, I'M BRUCE. YOU MIGHT REMEMBER ME FROM "EVIL DEAD".
No, Bruce Campbell is not in this film. Well, yea he is, but he isn't. Actually one soldier's name is "Bruce Campbell. The Sergeant of the squad is named H.G. Wells (played by Sean Pertwee). Nobody else has a cute name as far as I could tell but they all did a good job. Kevin McKidd, from the short-lived "Journeyman" TV show, plays Cooper, the Special Ops reject and lead. This is very much a character driven story like so many combat films, and none of the actors did anything that would hurt this film at any time. The end result is characters that the viewer can make emotional investments in.
- ER', WOTE'S OL DIS BOUT A STOORY?
Yea, these guys are speaking English but you might need the subtitles. These are true everyman characters that have various levels of intelligence and education. So, not surprisingly, they speak with United Kingdom colloquialisms. As hard as it is to understand their language, never do we fail to understand what they are; tools of The Crown. I would be spoiling a lot by explaining this in detail so I won't. Suffice it to say that this is not as simple as it appears on the surface and plays a lot like "Aliens" in a cottage in Scotland with werewolves.
-CARNAGE IMPLIED IS STILL CARNAGE.
Many will be thrilled to know that very little if any CG was used in this film. Director Neil Marshall is a fan of practical FX and put them to good use here. As much carnage as there is in this film, we only get to see the aftermath and not the actual events. That said; some fairly satisfying gore is splattered around "Dog Soldiers". Some of it is border-line silly, but in a good way.
Quick glimpses of the werewolves will have to do for a somewhat obvious reason; they're guys in static wolf heads wearing stilts. The longer you see them, the sillier they look. However, the glimpse technique actually works out, resulting in one of the better, scarier illusions of werewolves.
-IS THIS FUR YOU?
Sorry about that horrendous pun. The point is you should like "last stand" kinds of movies. This easily compares as a lower budget version of "Aliens" as I mentioned before. Where this differs from "Aliens" is that the characters are more realistic and less clichéd. You've probably met people like this. Though they never stop being soldiers their humanity shines through. So, I give the actors a lot of credit. The story is familiar yet unique enough to have a few surprises. There is a lot of action, shooting and suspense. You can find technical flaws if you really look for them, but then you deserve not to enjoy it. It may seem like there are some plot holes or unexplained events until you piece together the film as a whole, and then most of it makes perfect sense. I didn't catch everything at first, but it didn't stop me from enjoying "Dog Soldiers".
-Story........4.5
-Acting......4.5
-Visuals.......4.0
-Characters..5.0
Average......4.5
