Movie Reviews of Dodsworth

Movie Review: one of the finest adaptations of a novel into a movie
Summary: 5 Stars

among the best film adaptations from a novel. the brilliant walter huston stars as the cuckolded husband of ditzy ruth chatterton (in a perfect performance), who falls in love with mary astor while separated from his wife. when wifey decides she wants him back, huston has to leave the woman he loves in order to restore the aura of respectability. but whats different here is he says to hell with the wife to reunite with the mistress! william wyler directed this brilliant movie, which somehow or other made it past the 1936 censors. theres also a marvelous subsidiary plotline debating the merits of eurotrash phoniness as opposed to american honesty (dont get too excited, jingoists; theres also plenty of ameritrash and euro honesty). as mature a movie as youll ever see.

Movie Review: The happiness is a wild flower!
Summary: 5 Stars

The security sensation can give you a distorted perspective about the real state of things. Once you get what you want; many people assume the possessed issue will endure forever without mattering its intrinsic value and its development through the years.

The notable mind of Sinclair Lewis that portentous North American writer, created an expressive portrait around the doubtful illusion of the archetype know as self made man. Be careful with this detail that so many couples and families have destroyed I the past and still on.

One of the jewels of William Wyler in that prodigious decade of the thirties. Walter Huston shines once more in this delicate but profound drama that still maintains its vigorous actuality.

Movie Review: WONDERFUL FILM - GOOD PRINT - NO EXTRAS, NOTHING!
Summary: 5 Stars

Certainly one of the finest films of the '30s. The great, all but forgotten, Ruth Chatterton is simply marvelous. Walter Huston brilliantly underplays to Chatterton's over the top "diva" acting style. Mary Astor's beauty is Gibson Girl perfection. Maria Ouspenskaya and Chatterton's showdown gives ones heart a flutter!
I've always thought that the title, DODSWORTH, an unfortunate one - Sinclair Lewis must have had a writers block. Maybe the nothing title has something to do with a film of this quality being almost forgotten and ignored, and given a "poverty-row" DVD release by MGM (it's a Goldwyn production) without a single extra. Well, at least it's available and the print quality is good. No film collection is complete without it.

Movie Review: A movie for a desert isle....
Summary: 5 Stars

If I can only have one movie to take with me to that proverbial desert isle, I pick this one. The play between Walter Huston and Ruth Chatterton is really something to see...they gave the best performances of their careers here (and I love Chatterton in a little-known Pre-Code film called "Lilly Turner" which you should definitely seek out). The script VASTLY improves upon the book by Sinclair Lewis, and fleshes out the part of, to quote Chatterton, "that washed-out ex-patriate" played by Mary Astor. Praised in its day for its maturity and its sumptuous production, it is still an absolutely perfect film. The final 5 minutes show what an intense climax a director can create from a relatively tiny story.

Movie Review: Dodsworth worth it
Summary: 5 Stars

A succesful tycoon and his wife seek to rekindle their marriage with a vacation abroad. However, she soon ditches him for her newly formulated ideal partner: worldly, eloquent, refined, but also still rich. In despair, the tycoon seeks diversion by visiting all the sights of Europe in an attempt to put her out of his heart. When he meets a former cruise ship passenger who invites him to stay at her villa in Italy, he reluctantly succumbs to her charms only to learn his wife, tired of her worldly conquests, now seeks a reconciliation. William Wyler directs one of his first classics. Stars Walter Huston, Ruth Chatterton, Mary Astor, Paul Lukas and David Niven.
