Movie Reviews of DodsworthMovie Review: Amazon has the wrong name for the main male lead Summary: 5 Stars
Where on earth did you get "John Barkley"? Amazon should enlarge and look at it's own pictured product. They will see Walter Huston who plays the main character "Dodsworth" magnific
ently. Any movie lover should be familiar with his name if only because John Huston is his son. He directed his own father in the much loved classic "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre". He plays the old geezer who almost steals the show from Humphrey Bogart which is quite a feat. Dodsworth is one of his many outstanding performances, which he played on Broadway before the movie.
It is unexcusable not to credit him, and I will not buy this product from Amazon until it gets its information straight. The main stars of this great and very appealing even now movie are Huston, Mary Astor, Ruth
Chatterton and Paul Lukas, and it was directed by William Wyler. It is a superbly acted and unusually mature must see for any true movie buff.
Will Amazon read this? I doubt it, and it will continue to insult a great actor and a great movie with ridiculously wrong information.
Movie Review: Honest! Summary: 5 Stars
Dodsworth plays so honest and self assured its no surprise that it still resonates today with such a powerful impact! A married couple of wealth decide to embark on a honeymoon but soon their lust for others consume their small-town facades! Don't underestimate this flicks truth because after its over is where the true meaning of it holds up. For all of Sam Dodsworth open ended good nature his wife was not the evil one in this flick for having the affair it was Dodsworth Wyler paints him in such a warm often nerve popping good guy glow that when a little temptation enters the screen played to perfection by a cool Mary Astor he not only acts human but finally shows some depth. Thats what the films core is the elegance of the dinning scene and the warm glow that each sets of lovers past over one another turns the viewer into a sort of emotional referee! Teh dialogue gives the film its emotional anchor. Dodsworth is a classic for anytime due to the fact that the film not only captured emtions of love and even hate it put it into the open with such raw emotion and drama and even rewards the viewer for not only realizing love doesn't end with middle age it can even begin! A beautiful flick.
Movie Review: Timeless Tale of a Marriage on the Rocks Summary: 5 Stars
William Wyler's adaptation of Sinclair Lewis' "Dodworth" illustrates themes in 1936 that are as universal today as they were back in the day this film was produced. The film concerns a retired industrialist(Walter Huston) who takes an extended holiday to Europe with his vain wife(Ruth Chatterton) to reinvigorate their marriage. As their trip progresses, the fissures in their marriage expand. The wife's infidelities are more blatant and Dodsworth finds himself attracted to a down-to-earth expatriate divorcee(Mary Astor). This is a compelling film that is at times painful to watch. This is made so by the towering performance of Walter Huston who portrays his pain with quiet dignity and little histrionics. As a counterpoint, I found the behavior of Chatterton's character as the film progressed to be more over-the-top and insufferable. You begin to wonder why Huston would want to rekindle this marriage to this woman or how they even hooked up to begin with. Lastly, a young David Niven should be cited for a memorable turn as a naval captain who dresses down Chatterton's character for her transparently flirtatious ways.
Movie Review: Great Movie 5 stars plus Summary: 5 Stars
Wow to bad they do not make movies like this anymore.
Dodsworth is the kind of movie you can watch more than once and has list of great actors and plot is A++. Mr. Dodsworth played by Walter Huston is now retired and has money and wealth to do what he wants. Mrs. Dodsworth wants to go to Europe and stay for extended period of time and time after time Mrs. Dodsworth finds fault with old hubby and ask him to return home because she does not want to be reminded that she is getting on in yrs and this will give her the opportunity to explore relationship with younger and more handsome men the poor old hubby. The Mrs is totally self centered & absorbed her needs and wants and everybody else can go to blue blazes. The movie ends with old hubby finally admitting Mrs. Dodsworth is not worth all the effort to remain married to her and he finds someone esle that he can love and she loves him too great great ending to a very sadd story.
Movie Review: FORGOTTEN CLASSIC Summary: 5 Stars
Loosely interpreted version of Sinclair Lewis' best novel (arguably) springs to life on the screen as a Hollywood classic, seldom seen or mentioned anymore. Huston plays Sam Dodsworth, a bought out American businessman with plenty of time, money, and a wife with whom he's been going through the motions for years. A trip to Europe finds Mrs. Dodsworth on the hunt, first with a young David Niven, later with a young Frenchman ( Kurt), whom she's going to marry after a quick divorce in Vienna. Sam reacquaints himself, quite by accident,to Edith ( Mary Astor), a widowed American living in Southern Europe. This duo falls in love, but when Kurt's mother refuses to have her young son married to an older Mrs. Dodsworth (Chatterton), the cagey wife postpones the divorce and agrees to meet Sam to sail back to America. What follows, you'll have to see for yourself. Take it from this reviewer, the final 3 minutes are worth the price of most movies.
