Movie Review: Archetypal Western with Flynn's formula for Adventure. Still alot of fun.
Summary: 4 Stars
1939 was probally the greatest year in Hollywood history. Cinemas were just packed with amazing films in seemingly every genre. The Western which had floundered for most of the decade had come full circle in '39 with John Ford's "Stagecoach", the film that set the standard for the modern Western and this film.
Michael Curtiz directs with his usual surehand, utilizing beautiful technicolor photography that has to rank as some of the loveliest of the period. The action scenes are directed with enthusiasm and competance, especially the mother of all bar-room brawl scenes that is one of the most impressive action sequences in film history.
The cast is all uniformly excellent, with Flynn lending the same kind of boyish enthuiasm and heroism that he did in many of his swashbucklers. He makes an ideal Western hero and of course is partnered with the inimitable , Alan Hale, as well as Guinn "Big Boy" Williams. Olivia Dehaviland is a lovely leading lady and her romance scenes with Flynn are as usual, delightful. Bruce Cabot and Victor Jory are perfectly hissable villains and add to the film immeasurably. Anne Sheridan is also on hand in a small supporting role as a beautiful dance hall girl, along with nearly the entire Warner Bros stock company.
The plot is one that set a standard. Very basic stuff about a greedy cattle rustler scaring "good folk" out of town and Flynn having to clean up the town. In fact, it was this plot that formed the basis for the ultimate Western send-up, that being Mel Brook's "Blazing Saddles".
Still, despite it's routine feeling, this film is such a delightful piece of escapism that no one has ever really cared.
The DVD is presented fairly well with a load of special features including Theatrical Trailer, a eight minute documentary on the film and Warner Night at the movies,which re-creates the feeling of going to a film in that era complete with short subjects and cartoons including the Oscar winning short, "Sons of Liberty" with Claude Rains.
This DVD is a must have for fans of escapist adventure, Westerns, Classic cinema and the greatest swashbuckler of them all, Errol Flynn in his first Cowboy role.
Lots of fun.
