Movie Review: This was the perfect DVD for me to begin learning Bellydance

If you're a total novice who is interested in learning the art of Belly Dance, I think this DVD is a great place to start. Neena and Veena lead you through a series of the most basic moves in a very uncomplicated manner. The disc starts out with slow, exotic Middle Eastern music and we are shown a montage of clips that feature the twins demonstrating moves from the program. This was the first Belly Dance instructional DVD that I ever tried and I found myself captivated from the start. Watching it made me feel as though I was entering a special new world and it held my attention throughout the program.
The set used in the program is quite lovely. Lots of open space decorated in a rather Middle Eastern style- reminiscent of a lounge with plenty of candles. It's a beautiful setting for learning a beautiful art form. It really added to the overall elegant, relaxed, vibe of the disc.
And then there are The Belly Twins, Neena and Veena. They are incredibly graceful and inspiring and make Belly Dance look easier than it is, which I actually found helpful. The instructions are given via voice-over, which was new to me, while the twins demonstrate the moves.
Everything was taught slowly and methodically and in a very relaxed fashion which for me, was very enjoyable. The program is broken down into segments- lower body, upper body, traveling steps and ends with a short choreographed piece that incorporates all the demonstrated moves. Don't be discouraged if you aren't able to execute the routine the first few times you try it...Neena and Veena make it look much easier than it really is for a total novice. Keep practicing and you will get it eventually.
It's my opinion that this disc and the other companion discs in the "Discover Bellydance" series are intended to give absolute beginners an introduction to Belly Dance in a relaxed and non competitive manner. They don't get very complicated and for me, they were the perfect way to begin my journey into Belly Dance. I practiced with these discs for a few weeks before attending my first "live" Belly Dance class and it was a great help. I was able to keep up with the class and even received some compliments from the instructor who could not believe that I was a total newbie!
Nearly two years and several classes and DVDs later, I still go back to "Basic Dance" about once a month and use it to gauge my progress. It's wonderful to be able to execute the little choreographed part at the end of the program now. There were times when it seemed like that would never happen, but practice does make perfect, after all.
If the art of Belly Dance has piqued your interest, let Neena and Veena be your guide into this world. The program is beautiful to watch, easy to follow and completely enjoyable. Yes, there are other DVDs out there that offer more detailed and technical instruction, but they might be a tad overwhelming for the absolute beginner. Save those for later once your interest has been established and you are committed to learning this art form.
