Movie Reviews of Dire Straits: On the NightMovie Review: Good Performance From Knopfler And Company Summary: 4 Stars
I had the privilege of seeing Dire Straits three times during their "On Every Street" tour, from which this DVD was taken. I have previously seen the VHS and cable broadcast versions of this concert, and while there is more material found elsewhere, the quality of the DVD production is substantially better, although it is a bit of a travesty to see a Dire Straits show without "Sultans of Swing," as others have pointed out.
It pains me to give any Dire Straits production less than five stars, but I gave this DVD four for a couple of reasons, the most obvious being the obviously questionable editing of the set list. My other reason is a bit more related to this particular tour: the band got away from their roots and became a mammoth production with up to nine people onstage in some of the numbers which, for me, tended to obscure the music in some places (I got particularly tired of the excessive pedal steel guitar work on many of the songs.) That's personal preference, of course, and others love the larger orchestrations.
Overall I think this is a good DVD, although it really doesn't capture the energy of Dire Straits in concert as well as some other productions, including the much earlier, and generally superior, "Alchemy," which will hopefully be released on DVD soon.
Movie Review: Good concert, DVD is good but could be better Summary: 4 Stars
This DVD doesn't contain many songs, but what it does have are some of Dire Straits' hits from albums such as On Every Street, Brothers In Arms, and others. It's great to watch Dire Straits play these songs. Mark Knopfler's guitar playing is great as always, as is his unique voice and singing. The vocal harmonies on some of the songs (i.e. Walk Of Life) sound excellent.
The downside to this DVD is that it only has stereo audio (no surround mix), and the video is in the 1.33 aspect ratio (square, not wide screen). There are also no extras, and the DVD doesn't come with any notes or anything. This is why I only give it 4 stars; however, this is a great concert overall. One nice thing about the DVD is that it is region-free. I would recommend this for any Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler fan.
Movie Review: Dire Straits - On the Night - Concert DVD Summary: 4 Stars
I love DS and this concert includes all their great hits. I'm disappointed that the sound is only two channel however the concert was recorded back in the 90s and at least the quality is excellent. After a bit you get involved with the performance and the lack of surround doesn't seem to matter. Great performances, especially Knopfler, a huge guitar talent who doesen't seem to be all that involved with the performance at times however performs tremendously in spite. Percussion was also faultless. If you like DS you will like this DVD.
Movie Review: Dire Straits Live: On the Night Summary: 4 Stars
Dire Straits is an amazingly synergistic band, led in subtle ways by superb guitarist, composer and musician Mark Knopfler. Though primarily a rock band with lots of electric guitar, there are quieter and deeply moving parts as well. Overall, it is very musically diverse and interesting. The show itself, lights and effects, is remarkably well done with professional, tasteful, artistic camera work through out. Well worth adding to your musical video collection.
Movie Review: Heart Tugger! Summary: 4 Stars
This is one that tugged at my heart. Mark touched everyone at the concert. I watched and listened spellbound. And wow! Money for nothing!#$@* Get's you stomping. Brothers in Arms, is my favorite in the video. One can almost feel what Mark is feeling, his passion, his respect for those who gave thier lives. And nothing like watching their live performances. I never tire watching this video. A good buy. Leroy
