Movie Reviews of Dire Straits: On the NightMovie Review: Superlative concert Summary: 5 Stars
Easily one of the greatest Dire Straits concerts ever. A very young Mark Knopfler, and the rest of the band. One very endearing aspect of this band is the innate chemistry between the different members - they smile at each other, and the overall environment on stage seems very relaxed, pleasant and enjoyable. They really enjoy playing together. The energy of the band is evident, but most important of all - the music! You could listen to this concert with your eyes closed, and enjoy every moment of it - probably more. These guys can play. Knopfler's Sprechgesang - not quite singing, not quite speaking, is a unique way of imbibing emotion into the most ordinary of words. His guitar of course is really adding another 'voice' to his music. These guitars are all abut "tone". This concert is no different in that regard. One of the best renditions of 'Solid Rock", and "Local Hero". That last one will have you with either a very sad, and heavy heart, and/or tears welling up in your eyes - so moving is the rendition!
One of the drawbacks of the production, is that it is very simple: you get to either play a specific song, or the entire concert. We have been spoiled by other productions, which have background material, featurettes, and so on. None of that here. I also wish the concert was available in a Stereo rendition. You get a Dolby Digital version of the concert. Concerts are seen with the band performing in front of you, not all around you. The producers screwed up in that regard. Exceptional sound quality, though, and you can really hear the guitars wail. If you enjoy Knopfler, you'll love this concert.
Movie Review: denoument at its best Summary: 5 Stars
I tried to get this DVD for quite a while, and lost out a few times; once I got it, it stayed in the player for a couple weeks, and that was all I watched. I agree with another reviewer; as a guitar player, the closeups of Mark's fingers on the frets are invaluable (I even put it on slo-mo; there's no way you're gonna get it all watching at regular speed) and his grimaces of concentration show how much he puts into his work. (Good news; he hasn't changed.) Most of this material was from later Dire Straits efforts (the exceptions; Solid Rock, Romeo and Juliet, Private Investigations) but all was done cleanly and well, and it's patently obvious that the whole group is having a good time. It's always nice to see Mark smile. He smiles a lot on this tour.
I never got the opportunity to see the Straits in concert - a sin I've remedied since Mark has been out on his own - but I can tell that everyone in the stadium where this concert was filmed was totally involved, as it's clearly raining hard near the stage but nobody seems to care in the least. This was a group that was bound to evolve into the class act it was, and like gentlemen, they bowed out before they got stale. Shame they didn't last longer, but by this point Mark was ready to explore other avenues; at least he didn't fade away.
Movie Review: The End of the Straits Summary: 5 Stars
This is the video of the last Dire Straits' tour in the early 1990s. It was not, I read, as wildly successful as their tour of the mid 1980s and after the tour the Straits faded into history.
About one-half of the songs on the DVD are from the Straits last CD, "On Every Street." There is a country sound on many tracks, emphasized by Paul Franklin's steel guitar. I quickly tired of the opening rock numbers, "Calling Elvis," "Walk of Life," and "Heavy Fuel," but the mellow songs that followed made up for it. Mark Knopfler's moody and exquisite songs "Romeo and Juliet" and "Brothers in Arms" are here, as are superb versions of little known tunes such as "Your Latest Trick" "On Every Street" and "You and Your Friend." The bluesy, country solo of Knopfler in "You and Your Friend" is one of his best ever-- and that is saying something. "Money for Nothing" rocks and "Private Investigations" has the great guitar explosions at the end (although PI and "Local Hero" are both better in the other Straits live album "Alchemy").
Dire Straits was a tuneful high-quality group of musicians and Knopfler is a wonder on guitar. There's not a whole lot of flashy showmanship. They stand up Strait and play outstanding music.

Movie Review: On the Night, DVD Summary: 5 Stars
I have spent many a happy hour watching this dvd with my best friend and even now, after repeated viewings, I'm still left in awe at the musicianship on offer. From the concert opener `Calling Elvis' with that constant underlying pedal steel riff and tongue in cheek quacking percussion (you'll know what I mean when you hear it) to the awesome `Heavy Fuel' and `On Every Street' with more amazing pedal steel from Paul Franklin, this concert has a great selection of tracks from the `On Every Street' album. It also has some firm favourites like `Walk of Life', `Romeo and Juliet', `Private Investigation', `Money for Nothing' and `Brothers in Arms' to round of the track selection in style. Knopflers guitar playing is as tight and inspiring as ever and the tone he manages to wring out of his Pensa Suhr guitars is nothing but breath taking. The audience are obviously enjoying themselves, as are all the musicians and this makes for great viewing experience, really putting you in the moment with the crowd. For a slice of live Dire Straits this really can't be beaten and it is still a favourite live dvd of mine all these years later. Simply incredible.

Movie Review: Great concert. Summary: 5 Stars
I had the VHS version of this concert. I used to play it over and over again. Wondered how I never grew tired of it. Obviously, I got the DVD when I found it.
This is a very neat concert. Stage performance is neat, crowd is neat and sound is neat. Has a little bit of more orchestration than the album versions. This is on the eve of On every street tour. Never one place I feel fatigueness or irritation. It can be thoroughly enjoyed. Sultans of swing would have been nice. But that apart it still is great. No additional sound processing for the DVD version. But I'm going to give it a 5, if not I will not be doing justice to the performance.
