Movie Reviews of Dinner RushMovie Review: Revenge is a dish best served cold... Summary: 4 Stars
I first saw this movie on a jet plane 36,000 feet over Europe. Being a Travel, Food and Wine Writer myself, I can identify a lot with the characters in the movie from the snooty chef groupie to the raunchy femme fatale food writer. All the action takes place in one evening from about 5pm to 12 midnight. The twists and turns in the plot are a joy to watch and enjoy. The acting is very good, gritty and realistic. It captures the heat in the kitchen and the reactions of the guests to the food and all the fast paced escapades in the busy restaurant. The up and coming Celebrity chef is smmoth and slick, especially when it comes to buttering up the lady food writers... in more ways than one (and I'm not talking about the Tiramisu). La Cosa Nostra features prominently too, and I liked the line when the restaurant owner tells the Police officer his views on Omerta (the centuries old Mafia vow of silence), "You don't believe that s_ _ _ , do you?" The hitman is really excellent, and at the end of the movie, you realise that, just like in a good spy movie, nothing is quite what it seems. The ending is most satisfying..check my title and you'll see what I mean. It is a very old and immortal Sicilian proverb. Ciao! Dr. Michael Lim The Travelling Gourmet
Movie Review: Very Entertaining Summary: 4 Stars
The premise of this movie is rather simple - father/restaurant-owner/bookie wants to get out of the bookie business; son/chef who wants to take over the restaurant as part of growing up; young family friend in trouble with bookies.. BUT.. don't let that dissuade you from watching.Except for the opening scene, the events of the movie all take place during one night and largely in one place when the conflicts built into the premise converge in the restaurant. The cinematography is outstanding - the ballet of activity in the kitchen is wonderfully filmed The acting is all top-notch. Even the minor characters (waiters, cooks, guests) deliver their roles well. The only drawback here is Sandra Bernhard as a food writer - she does schtick rather than acting. The plot is simple and fairly predictable, but so was Casablanca which in some ways this movie's structure resembles. Watch and enjoy. Warning - eat a good meal first; the dinner scenes will make you hungry.
Movie Review: great movie! Summary: 4 Stars
Initially, when I heard about this movie, it really didn't interest me. A mobster movie that takes place in a restaurant? Every mobster movie does that for at least five minutes and then goes on to the more interesting aspects of mob life. Yeah, Italian mobsters eat in Italian restaurants, but that's just where they eat. If I wanted to see food or people eat, I'd just watch the food network. So, yeah, this movie didn't interest me at first, but it's really quite good! I'm so glad I saw it! The pace of the movie is so fast, and yet it flows so naturally. I didn't expect the cool ending, mostly because the story just kept developing and developing and it seemed like the night would just go on forever (in a good way). It's like a really long episode of Cheers but in a fancy New York restaurant with mobsters and hipsters. All of the characters are fascinating and charismatic. It's a very rewarding movie definately worth seeing!
Movie Review: Deliciously Entertaining Summary: 4 Stars
The characters are what drive this movie and make it fun to watch. Though I realize that last lobster dish he created for the stuck-up food critic was meant to be ridiculous, I still found myself drooling all over the couch. Danny Aiello is perfect as the low-key restauraunt owner who is not impressed with his star chef son's cuisine. The events are realistic, and I loved the pretentious, condesending "Fitzgerald" jerk who just rips his waitress to shreds with his lowbrow, rude remarks. The gay maitere D was hilarious as was the ... bartender who challenges his customers to trivia and rakes in the dough. My only semi-complaint was the ending which I found to be rather predictable and unbelievable, saw it coming a mile away. Still, this is a great indy film, and a must-see for anyone who works or has worked in a trendy restaurant.
Movie Review: Visually rich, good acting, nice twist at the end Summary: 4 Stars
NO SPOILERS HERE: This is a shorter film than most and is without a gripping plot, but I was captivated by the acting and the visual richness. There are a few interwoven story lines. If you are interested in restaurants and/or cooking, food and restaurant trends, or just the type of films that have more character exploration than action, you will enjoy this one. The actor who played an art critic taking some artists and hangers on to dinner was so effective at his role that I felt uncomfortable watching him. I had an idea of how it would end and was right, but that didn't spoil it for me. Too bad Hollywood never makes sequels to good films like this one - the various story lines leave lots of possibilities.
