Movie Reviews of Die Mommie Die!Movie Review: "This Is Superb Darling!!!" Summary: 5 Stars
If you want to watch a movie and forget the problems in the world like the economy or the wars, watch "Die Mommie Die", a campy and funny film based on the kind of movies Bette Davis and Joan Crawford did back in the '50's and '60s. Playwright Charles Busch, who also wrote the screenplay, stars in this little independent feature as a woman caught in a loveless marriage with an older man. They have 2 children, a spoiled, rotten girl, who is the apple of her father's eye who hates her mother with a passion, and a good-looking son, dealing with his sexuality. This plot reminds me of the early days of "Dynasty" and the Carrington clan. Angela Arden, the Busch character, is trying to reinvent her career as a singer, much to her husband's chagrin. He eventually dies a mysterious death, in which we, as the audience, try to discover who performed the deed. None of this is takin' seriously, as the movie is more a comedy. There are some fantastic one-liners, and Charles Busch would make Joan Crawford proud. I also must add Mr. Busch looks fabulous in drag, and there were many times I had to remind myself that it was actually a man playing the female lead. The cast is first rate with hunky Jason Priestley playing Angela's one-time lover, who sleeps with both her daugter and son!
The DVD has many bonuses including commentary by the cast, trailers, the Sundance Channel's "Anatomy of a Scene", featuring the making of the film, screen tests, a deleted scene, and a video with Charles Busch, as Angela, performing the song "Why Not Me?', plus much more.
Mr. Busch also received the Special Jury Prize in 2003 for Oustanding Performance from the Sundance Film Festival. "The Washington Posts" says, the movie..."succeeds with a big, false-eyelashed wink".
Movie Review: IT'S ALL GREEK TO ME..... Summary: 5 Stars
This one really rivals "American Beauty" and has been regaled to being camp, etc. etc. etc.
Look closely .... it IS actually an adaptation of the original Greek 'ORESTEIA' - with Clytemnestra [Charles Busch], Elektra, Orestes [the kids], Aegistheis [Jason Priestly] and the futile husband Agamemnon.
It also compares very favorably to the Jules Dassin "Phaedra" [Melina Mecouri/Anthony Perkins].
and is somewhat 'spot on' since the Ancient Greek theatre only featured male actors, and yep, there is a bow or two in the direction of Crawford and Davis [but weren't they vaguely asexual towards the end, as a matter of fact, with due respect, Crawford began to look more and more like her father, those eyebrows, the jawline, the 'specific' lighting].
Davis? Well, all went 'south' after the Merrill marriage - see for yourself!
THIS one is great fun though ... would like to see the future incarnations of the Busch character [even smatters of Julianne Moore in 'Far From Heaven' remember that delightful comment from, 'tortured' husband Dennis Quaid during the cocktail party].
Doug Sirk would applaud this one!
[Deserves a sequel featuring *Priestly, Busch and a Rock Hudson look-alike - just for fun!].
[PS HUGE nod to the costume designer - fabulous work!]
*Jason Priestly deserved great applause for this performance - now here IS an actor who is totally unafraid to explore and deliver!!
Movie Review: An underrated classic you must see.... Summary: 5 Stars
This singularly unique film has yet to be fully appreciated for its cunning wit and hilarity. The LOGO Network has been giving this movie heavy play, but they offer a severely expurgated version. The DVD version is what you want to see. I've watched this movie multiple times, and each time I do, I'm reminded of Charles Busch's brilliance, both as a writer and a performer. This is a film that will one day be considered a "classic," and I can't recommend it highly enough. Buy the DVD and see for yourself!
Movie Review: Die Mommie Die, DVD Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the campiest movies I've seen since Mommie Dearest. And speaking of which, you'll recognize bits and pieces from Mommie Dearest, Whatever Happened To Baby Jane, All About Eve and a host of other classics. I've seen the movie several times and purchased it for a friend this past Christmas!
Movie Review: A fun movie! Summary: 5 Stars
This was a really fun movie and one I can highly recommend. Charles Busch is fantastic as the lead and is quite accomplished as a drag queen.
