Movie Reviews of Devdas (2 Disc Set)Movie Review: Aweful copy! Summary: 3 Stars
My review is ONLY on the quality of the DVD itself. The picture is awful, no definition whatsoever, looks like a pirated copy.
Movie Review: Sad film.... Summary: 2 Stars
This was the first Aishwarya Rai film I had seen after the English language version of Bride and Prejudice, so I was really looking forward to it. The music, dancing and costumes are lovely as is Ash as always.
I personally don't care for Shahrukh Khan, so when he played the total drunk, sad character in this film, it didn't help me like him any better. I am always frusterated with Indian custom of the girls father trying to pick the richest guy for his daughter, not caring about what kind of person he is or where her heart truly lies. Once again, this film followed that theme: that money and prestige are everything.
I hated the ending-this film was way too depressing for me, but the CD soundtrack is very nice as I own it and enjoy it.
Movie Review: Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Think This Is A Great Love Story?? Summary: 1 Stars
(For other Aishwarya films, try "Jodhaa Akbar"; "Kuch Naa Kaho"; "Dil De Chuke Sanaam"; "Guru"; "Dhaii Akshar Prem Ke." For Shahrukh Khan films, try "Veer-Zaara"; "Kal Ho Naa Ho"; "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.")
I'm a big fan of a superb plot and the depth of characterization in a movie so I never thought to say this about Devdas after reading such rave reviews: it fell short of a few stars. The overall story and structure are weak - there's no heroine, there's no hero and there's no hope for any of the leading characters. What's even more depressing is that you can't even root for the main characters and their love for one another. The movie should be deemed a "tragedy."
Since I sat thru the whole movie, I thought I'd at least do a recap of how bad it was...
Devdas is the male lead and his plan to propose to Paro is all too quickly thwarted and shattered by his conniving sister-in-law. Devdas doesn't have enough backbone to make a public declaration of his love for Paro so she ends up heartbroken, shamefully betrayed by the one man she loves, and married to another. Devdas falls under a heavy influence of alcohol in hopes of forgetting Paro. He then meets a prostitute who immediately falls madly in love with him despite his utter rejection of her. Devdas and Paro meet again later but as the movie progresses, Devdas just remains utterly inebriated. And, unless you have a high tolerance for drunkards, your pity for him will turn into strong dislike for his character. Other than the dancing, there wasn't anything memorable about the movie. Paro was too subtle, utterly submissive and passive, not showing any emotion about her shattered love until the end, when it's too late. Devdas just cries throughout the WHOLE movie -- It seemed like there was never a scene in which he didn't have tears either in his eyes or rolling down his cheeks. MAN UP, Devdas!
I often refrain from writing negative reviews but I ignored the one-star reviews and rented this movie anyway and I sat through it thinking, "maybe there's a redeeming factor at the end" but there wasn't any, because just when you think it couldn't get any worse, it does - right at the end! The ending is horrible!! Are people really drawn to movies that depict a life of regret?? I'm sure there are a number of people who will ignore this warning. I just hope that Aishwarya's stunning appearance, acting and dancing are enough to appease the agony of sitting through the horrible plot, story, and outcome.
Movie Review: Great movie but a piece of junk DVD Summary: 1 Stars
I highly recommend the movie Devdas for anyone who loves Bollywood or is even just beginning to learn of Indian cinema. The camera work and scenery are dazzling; the songs and dance are fantastic. It has top stars who do not disappoint. That said I cannot recommend this specific DVD. I still wonder if I got some pirated version. The video transfer was terrible as if done by some cheap hack: colors are erratic and the image shifts around. This is particularly true during a couple of dance sequences. It is unacceptable and the sole disappointment I have ever had with an Amazon purchase over the years. Do buy the movie, but not this version....choose one of the DVD's with a different cover. A great movie deserves something better than this DVD publication.
Movie Review: Good movie, horrid copy Summary: 1 Stars
I know this film, having rented it several times. It's a fun melodrama with gorgeous costumes and dancing so I wanted to offer a copy to my 9 yr old who just loves Bollywood. Loves this film specifically.
This is a HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE copy that looks like something pirated off the Internet - the resolution and colors are AWFUL, the subtitles are amateurish and not at all aesthetic: huge white Helvetica on black beneath the film. If you try to watch widescreen, you won't be able to read them.
The real deal is a feast for the eyes and well worth the money. If this is the best Amazon can offer, they're in trouble - a HUGE disappointment.
