Movie Reviews of Devdas (2 Disc Set)

Movie Review: What about subtitles?
Summary: 5 Stars

My question is, since Amazon did not include the answer in the descriptions, does this movie have English subtitles?

Movie Review: Ludicrous Plot; Gorgeous Dressing
Summary: 4 Stars

At first glance, this version of Devdas has everything going for it. Big name stars, heart-stopping visuals, stirring music and a storied pedigree as yet another adaptation of a Bengali literary classic.
Well, all those things do work but it is a bunch of sound and fury signifying nothing. The more you think about the film, the less it holds up. Part of the problem is that Shah Rukh Khan's performance is embarrassingly bombastic. If you enjoy watching him be a jerk, then you'll like him better in Don, and even Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna ( I did!). It makes it mind-boggling that not one but two gorgeous and possibly intelligent women would go through so much for him. By the end you might just want his character to just die, already.
Also, if you care to look into it, there are some definite issues with how this director chose to adapt the book, glossing over some key issues about class, dropping some plotlines and character developments, amongst other things; and what his decision to bling out everything in sight did to the original story.
There are some good performances in this movie: Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff, to name a couple. Aish isn't asked to do much but look fabulous and so she does, acquitting herself well in the big Dola Re Dola dance number ( as improbable as it may have been for a "respectable" wife to invite a hooker into the family manse for a song and dance).
You may well want to invest in Devdas because it really is spectacular, if flawed. Just don't kid yourself that this is the ultimate in Bollywood/Indian film-making. Do yourself a favour and check out the earlier versions of Devdas, for one...

Movie Review: wonderful movie, but quality not of DVD standard
Summary: 4 Stars

I watched a cheap copy of the movie after a trip to India, and also after learning that the beautiful Aishwarya is in the movie.

The story, cast and especially the set is totally out of this world, not to mention the wonderful discovery of amazing Madhuri Dixit. The movie definitely make one appreciate Bollywood even if one has never seen Bollywood movies before. The two scenes (Maar Dala & Kaahe Chhed Mohe) where Madhuri danced as a courtesan is dream like and never cease to impress even after repeated viewing.

The quality of the cheap copy from the local Indian shop is of poor quality, so when it came on Free to Air, I watched the entire movie again and it was of excellent quality. That's when I decided to purchase the 2 Disks DVD set from Amazon.

The brand new copy, although it is labeled EROS International, the media is only a DVD5 (4.35GB) and also a DVD-R copy. The DVD label is printed on a sticker (slight bubbled) and not on the DVD itself, and the quality of the transfer is only slightly better than the one I watched from the local Indian shop. This is a shame because for such a beautifully made movie, one expects it to be presented in DVD quality, not VCD quality. To be able to see the compression artifact during dance movements and on Madhuri's beautiful eye and facial expressions is annoying to say the least.

I wondered if the movie was made using film in 2002, if ever a digital remastered version of the movie in DVD or Bluray is available, I will buy another copy without hesitation.

Movie Review: Two of Bollywood's most ravishing beauties
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought Devdas mostly because of the lovely Aishwarya Rai, but it was Madhuri Dixit who really caught my eye as the mischievous Chandramukhi. The story itself is nothing special but the movie is so full of color and movement and vitality that it is really a pleasure to watch, even when the title character, played by Shahrukh Khan, grows too tiresome to endure. The action pretty much swirls around Devdas' inability to cope with his upper class life, passing over the beautiful Paro and proceeding to live a life of debauchery, which he ultimately blames on Chandramukhi. She is no femme fatale, but a ravishing and wonderfully complex character. I think Madhuri Dixit stole the show from Aishwarya Rai, who was a bit too sugary for my tastes in this movie. The story could have used a little less drama and much more comedy, as Devdas' excrutiating self pity tended to bring this movie down.

Movie Review: An epic sensual overload
Summary: 4 Stars

This was one of the biggest blockbusters in India of all time. It is also immensely popular outside of India.

Apparently the plotline is based on an old Bengali tale. There is even an earlier, lower-budget version in Bengali, but this giant Bollywood production is in Hindi.

This is a lush period piece set in the early 20th century. The cinematography and set design is unbelievably gorgeous. The songs, sung in the style of the time, are mesmerizing. And my girl, Madhuri Dixit, the worlds' greatest dancer, steals the show. And Shahrukh Khan fans will not be disappointed by his performance. Yes, true to form, he spends half of the film in tears.

In summary, Instant Classic!
