Movie Reviews of Devdas (2 Disc Set)

Movie Review: A milestone in Indian Cinema
Summary: 5 Stars

Devdas tells the story of unrequited love in the lives of three people entangled with each other in a very melodramatic and poetic fashion.
Dev (ShahRukh Khan) is a rich landlord's son and his neighbour's daughter Parvathi or Paro (Aishwarya Rai) is his love interest from childhood. The story is set in British India times and Dev returns to India from London after his education and falls in love again with the now grownup Parvathi.
Parvathi has a lamp that she never lets die as a symbol of their love.
Following a rift between the two families, Devdas writes a letter asking Paro to forget him and move on and leaves his house vexed. The griefstricken Paro agrees to an arranged marriage after being convinced that Devdas never truly loved her.
Meanwhile Devdas who lives with his friend Chunnibabu is taken to a famous Courtesan's house to watch her dance. As he watches Chandramukhi's(Madhuri Dixit) splendid performance he realises that his love for Paro can never be replaced and goes back home.
He is shocked to see Parvathi married off to another man and takes up drinking to forget Parvathi. Meanwhile the courtesan Chandramukhi who is in love with Devdas takes him under her wing. Though Devdas always treats Chandramukhi with contempt, she faithfully serves him, hoping to one day gain a place in his heart.
Paro learns of Devdas's drinking habit and approaches Chandramukhi to stop his drinking. She learns that Devdas has not visited Chandramukhi either in several months. They become friends and Parvathi invites Chandramukhi to her house for a festival to dance. Things become complicated when Parvathi's family learns that her "friend" Chandramukhi is a prostitute. The story moves on with intense fervour and climaxes at Parvathi's doorstep where a dying Devdas yearns to see Paro for one last time.
This film is India's costliest film made to date with grand sets and costumes with filming and production that went on for a few years. The dances are very beautifully choreographed with both actresses Madhuri and Aishwarya known for their excellent dancing skills outperforming each other in the song Dola Re.
Shahrukh's acting touches one's heart. The dialogues are poetic and very well written.
This movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in France and buying this DVD is most defenitly money well invested in art.

Movie Review: Intro to Bollywood - UPDATE
Summary: 5 Stars

Accidentally marked my earlier Review as Kids Review - so I can't edit it.

I examined the Discs on my PC and THEY ARE BOTH 4.7 Gig Discs
[same as store bought basic discs]

At least THE MOVIE DISC SHOULD HAVE BEEN 9 GIGS in size to match what all movie companies are delivering

This is like viewing a bootleg - detail loss - the Bonus disc looks better
If you have the time view Madhuri Dixit's dancing on both Discs

Really Great intro to BollyWood though recently made. The Reason Why? the Music is very incorporated into the story and events - celebrations, drinking weddings, etc. the most noticeable are 2 "seduction" scenes.

BUT!!!!!!!!

This should have been spanned across 2 DVD's not "compressed onto one.

Some streaming web video looks better. [Like HULU on DSL]

The costumes, sets, scenes, dancing, cinematography etc all 'artifact, glitch city' due to squeezing an extra hour on to a DVD - I didn't check if this was a 9 gig or 4.7 gig DVD. There was detail loss, color shifts, jumping characters. Yet, amazingly enough lipsynch wasn't lost [No Britney Spears flubs] and the dance and music was in synch - during some dance numbers you see some brief flashing.

There is also a 3 Disc set - avoid this - it is one English - One Hindi Disc - plus the Bonus disc here.

Malhudri Dixit - does her own Singing - one of the few who does.

Other than this occasional near web quality video - this is the film to introduce a Newbie to BollyWood

Also check WikiPedia for more info on this and any BollyWood Title.

PS: Devdas was made 8 times previously - with a Modernized due this year 2009

Movie Review: Not quite what I was expecting, but really great
Summary: 5 Stars

Devdas is really, really sad. I don't just mean the title character, Devdas, but the entire film. It's beautifully shot and terrifically acted, but it's really, really sad. It reads like one of those Russian romances where everyone dies pitiful deaths, unrequited and miserably alone.

But it is SUCH a beautiful movie. Even the grisly miserable scenes are just gorgeous. And there are some grisly miserable scenes. I'll admit, I didn't know what I was getting into. The Indian movies I'd previously been exposed to were lighthearted romantic comedies with extravagant musical numbers and multiple inexplicable costume changes. I didn't expect high drama and soul-crushing anguish. I'm so glad that I own a copy of this now, since it's a really incredible film, but be warned: it's not a happy movie. Beautifully filmed and performed, but not happy. I'm rather glad that I didn't know quite what to expect, since I was completely blown away by this film.

My copy came in great condition with a separate, fully labeled and official soundtrack disc, something I vastly appreciate since the soundtrack is WONDERFUL.

Movie Review: Hooray for Bollywood
Summary: 5 Stars

Being new to Bollywood films, I didn't know what to expect.
After watching this film, I would wager that it probably is one of the best of this genre. Lots of fun! But also lots of romance & pathos.
In the song and dance sequences, it is entertaining in the way that Busby Berkeley's films are. The scrumpalicious romances, of course, are melodramatic tear-jerkers of the highest order. The male lead (Shahrukh Khan) is an awful, stuck-on-himself indicative 'actor', but given the star-making quality of the 2 female protagonists in their perspective roles (Madhuri Dixit & Aishwarya Rai), that can be forgiven.
The lavishness of the sets, the riotous colors, the great soundtrack are worthy of the best Hollywood musicals.
And I also learned something about Indian culture, to boot.
5 stars for sure; you'll gladly drink to that!
