Movie Reviews of Destination TokyoMovie Review: Destination Tokyo Summary: 4 Stars
I'm a sucker for World War II movies, especially submarine movies. This is one of the best in my opinion along with "Run Silent, Run Deep". Cary Grant also provides a good performance as the sub's captain. I could only wish it was printed in color!
Movie Review: The Keys Of The Kingdom Summary: 4 Stars
A fine movie, Peck is the best. This is about a missionaries life. It might touch on the meaning of life for some. Is happiness about getting things or service to mankind?
Movie Review: Das Boot it ain't Summary: 3 Stars
Saw this on TCM and was drawn in by the repartee among the submarine crew members. Some captivating close-up sequences. Dane Clark is quite engaging, the little schmuck. John Ridgely shows real charisma in the few scenes he has. Garfield is annoying and fat, while Grant for once puts his charm on the back burner in order to channel Naval authority, to underwhelming effect, though he looks handsome enough.
The film would have been better had Daves concentrated on the interpersonal dynamics. The tedious and predictable cut aways to a model submarine submerged in two feet of water strain credulity. Ditto the hokey looking process shots in almost all outside action sequences except the documentary footage, of which there is no end. There's a little bit of everything in terms of film technique and content here. As a result "Destination Tokyo" won't satisfy either the action-film buff or the human-drama aficionado completely.
Warners has done nothing in the way of restoration, so buy this dirty and often blurry transfer to watch on your analog television only.
Movie Review: Not a good reproduction Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this because it had an incident that actually took place, the appendectomy aboard a submarine. The story was good but the reproduction got distorted in the middle. The picture was jerky, jumpy, and the sound stopped and started. It was disturbing. I don't know if it was just my copy or all the CDs are like that.
Movie Review: How to ruin a Fantastic motion picture Summary: 1 Stars
COLORIZE IT!!!! I have a problem in taking a wonderful action packed WWI sumbmarine movie with suspense, action, and more stars that you can count and totaly mess it up with someones interpertation of what something looks like in color. I bought the colorized movie by accident some years ago and it looked like a 5 year-old took a crayon and colored inside the frames. I returned it the next day. Keep B/W movies the way they were made. In the movie someone asks "Do prayers really work" and the reply was "I know they do", well I'm praying that the B/W version comes out VERY SOON!!
