Movie Reviews of Deconstructing HarryMovie Review: Could Woody Allen be the American Fellini? Summary: 4 Stars
Right--Woody Allen as Fellini. That's rich. But the man obviously knows his Fellini; remember the insufferable bore who stood behind Woody and Diane Keaton in "Annie Hall"? The most irritating thing about the guy is that he was probably right--Fellini was indeed a very indulgent filmmaker. He's just too loud about it. But who wrote the dialogue that he spoke? Woody Allen. He's made a viscious, vulgar, and funny movie in "Deconstructing Harry". But oh Lord is he indulgent. Few people have so lavishly exposed their emotional and personal ticks to the world, with such faith that everyone will care. He's still extremely talented. But someday, someone will make a movie in which the hero stands on line in front of some jerk who says, "I just thought Allen's last film was so indulgent. It's true, he's really one of the most indulgent filmmakers..."
Movie Review: WOODY CREATES HARRY CREATING KEN WHO COULD BE PART OF WOODY Summary: 4 Stars
Intellectual pleasure is so rare today that it would be really masochistic not to enjoy DECONSTRUCTING HARRY. Woody Allen had already treated in THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO the theme of imaginary creations coming to life and, this time, these are no more movie heroes but book's characters. With a plot line like this one, Woody had to write a really solid screenplay in order not to get lost in the multiple possibilities it involves. And it works ! Harry is an unusual variation of the Woody character we know. He's a hooker addict, a womanizer and he likes to drink alcooholic beverages. Around him, Judy Davis, Amy Irving and Richard Benjamin give above-average performances. The cinematography is excellent, Woody trying some interesting arty effects like an "out of focus" Robin Williams and chaotic editing. A DVD fo your self.
Movie Review: What a great movie! Summary: 4 Stars
I believe this to be one of Woody Allen's new classic films. It's fun, sexual, and of course a bit weird. What else do you expect from Woody? I own this DVD and give the movie a full 5 stars but the DVD itself lacks a bit so it gets only a 4 star rating. Couldn't they at least put the trailer on the DVD? I also wish Woody would do running commentary like on some other titles but no such luck. The only real extra on this DVD is the Cast List/Biography/Filmography for almost 20 known actors. Also, the DVD has no art and is double-sided, this feature allows you to watch the film in full screen mode or wide screen mode. Apparently you must physically flip the disc to switch between the two modes. All in all this DVD is worth buying . . . unless there is a new release with more features (I seriously doubt that will happen). Enjoy it!
Movie Review: Why do so many people dislike Woody Allen? Summary: 4 Stars
To my mind, Woody Allen is one of the best american directors of all time. Unfortunately it seems that not many people share my opinion. Like nearly all recent Woody Allen films (the also very good "Sweet and Lowdown" is the latest example), "Deconstructing Harry" was not a commercial success. That is really a pity, because this film is among the funniest in recent years. As always, Woody delivers a film that is both witty and hilarious. The cast is close to perfection, especially Judy Davies does a brilliant job. Some reviewers found the picture annoying and self-indulgent. I think they mistakenly assume, that the real Woody Allen is portayed in the movie and not a fictional character. And by the way, who wants to know who's live is portrayed if you are so well entertained.
Movie Review: 8 1/2 (a) Summary: 4 Stars
this is fellini, woody allen style. "deconstructing harry" consciously mirrors fellini's masterpiece "8 1/2", a film about a director suffering from "director's block", who is confronted by the people in his life (past and present) and forced to face his shortcomings. allen's film is nowhere near as lush and lyrical, however, as "8 1/2". nevertheless, it's a nice flick from the wood-man and does shed light on the relationship between his art and his personal life - not that his other films are exactly reticent on that subject!
