Movie Reviews of Deconstructing HarryMovie Review: Disturbing, so what? Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of those movies that you can watch again and again and every time you do it, you discover something new to it. I think it's a lot like Stardust Memories, it is truly funny but it isn't a happy film, that is, of course, until you watch it again. The message is clear and simple, which makes it a great film as most of the films today carry no message at all. My favorite part is when the devil says life "it's like Vegas, sometimes you're up, sometimes you're down. At the end the house always wins, doesn't mean you didn't have fun." That says it all.
Movie Review: Brilliant! Summary: 5 Stars
Definitely the pinnacle of Woody Allen's later period. Funny, insightful, gutsy & honest, it rivals great literature including the best of Phillip Roth.
Odd the number of pantywaists offended by the "foul language" of this film. Same people, I guess, who felt Stardust Memories was mean-spirited. Hah!
What does that tell us? Mainly that far too many viewers have been boobed down by too much television watching from their earliest days. Great film!
Movie Review: love him or hate him... Summary: 5 Stars
At the outset, i'll admit i adore Woody Allen's written and cinematic work. After seeing about 80% of his known film's, Deconstructing Harry is one of the most outstanding. i get a sense of melancholic (in that gin & tonic way that only Allen can do Melancholy)closure from this film. Judy Davis is, as always, engrossing. As for the DVD quality, Woody's films were never done justice on VHS. If you don't ever see this in a theatre, see it on DVD.
Movie Review: "...if I tell you why I did it, do you promise not to NOODGE me ? " Summary: 5 Stars
10 years --- still shock & awe funny. Very smart, but just not dubbable for basic cable or broadcast-cuttable for the commissars of the ridiculous FCC. The character, Woody Allen himself, is filled with rage, addictions and cowardice, but wants to appeal to our empathy, not our apathy. Referring to victims of this or that...he announces at one point while visiting his sister's pious, well-meaning household: "...they are ALL your people!..."
Movie Review: A Pretty Cool Flick Summary: 5 Stars
In spite of what people say, I think Woody Allen seems like a cool guy. His movies are very self-conscious and pretenscious. But that's his act. Like an unsafe version of George Castanza, but of course he is the original neurotique guy. Tracey Singer (who helped on the soundtrack) helped me form most of my opinions about this film when I met him at a songwriters convention at the Cultural Center in Tijuana.
