Movie Reviews of Deck the Halls

Movie Review: Funny? Yeah to some extent. More like 3 1/2 stars
Summary: 3 Stars

Every year we give it a shot at a "Christmas" movie, and rarely ever is there one that's worth watching. "Deck the Halls" isn't that bad and there were a number of real funny lines, mostly attributed to Danny DeVito.
The story is about a car salesman, - and once again the cliche, sleezy and so forth -, Danny DeVito as Buddy Hall, who moves with his family to this small town and gets the idea that he wants to do something extraordinary, ... he wants his house to be seen from outer space through some sort of Website that tracks the brightest spots on earth. To accomplish his pursuit he buys as many lights that he can find to decorate his house. This is very annoying to his neighbor, played by Matthew Broderick, who is supposed to be the authority on Christmas in this small town and who loves a traditional Christmas instead of the circus that Buddy Hall puts into motion.
Well, as said, there are some funny lines in this film, and maybe a not so hidden message, that being with the family and the value of a family is more important than the details of the Christmas rush. I didn't find this movie too hillarious as it seems like that there's something missing, but it sure beats "Christmas with the Kranks" from last year by a mile. "Deck the Halls" is a relaxed Saturday afternoon popcorn flick.

Movie Review: Any excuse to get Kristin Chenoweth to sing!
Summary: 3 Stars

I admit it...I only rented this one to hear Kristin Chenoweth sing. No one told me she would, but she sings in every movie she does. Had she sang three or four songs, I might have given this movie more than 3 stars.

Let's face it, Matthew Broderick hasn't been funny since his days as Bueller. Danny Devito has never been funny...well, maybe in Throw Mama From the Train.

This was just another sad script for a Xmas movie just like all the others recently. Two feuding neighbors racing to see who can out do each other. Matthew is Mr. Traditionalism. Danny is the new guy in town trying to leave a mark. His "mark" is an outstanding Xmas light display which also makes the movie worth seeing if you appreciate a good holiday yard show. It's so bright, it keep Matthew awake. Let the feuding begin!

Not boring, but not really funny. And certainly nothing new you haven't seen before. Ah, Kristin...rent it to just to hear her sing....oh, and the Christmas lights are pretty too.

Movie Review: "I'm The Christmas Guy"
Summary: 3 Stars

The '06 release 'Deck the Halls' provides an amusing diversion and a couple of chuckles for the family to share during the holiday season. There's not much original here, the usual stuff, two overzealous guys turn the Christmas season into a competition to see who's to be the towns go-to "Christmas Guy." As you might expect, what begins as good natured one-up-man-ship soon evolves into mean spirited actions that threatens to break-up friendships and families.

Matthew Broderick and Danny DeVito work well together as the battling neighbors while Kristin Davis and the curvaceous Kristin Chenoweth add some much appreciated scenery to compliment their husbands' out of control antics. If you like 'Jingle All the Way' you'll like this one too.

Movie Review: Deck the House with Bright Lights
Summary: 3 Stars

When I saw the reviews here I rented and didn't expect much. I was pleasantly surprised by the movie. This is as good or better than most the latest holiday fare out there. In a nutshell Devito moves to Broderick's neighborhood and takes over with his friendliness and Christmas lighting. Broderick tries to strike back but things don't go as planned for either of them. Some hilarious moments as Devito tries to make his lights visible in outer space. Overall a funny family movie if you enjoyed "Christmas with the Kranks" or "Jingle All the Way". Decent quality DVD with no extras. I wouldn't pay $19.99 for it, but $9.99 wouldn't be out of line. Reasonably replayable Christmas movie.

Movie Review: You Know
Summary: 3 Stars

I wouldn't have minded this dumb little movie so much if it were at least original. Every gag in the movie has already been done to death in other holiday movies. Matthew and Danny do what they can in their roles. They are exactly what you would expect. Matthew is the uptight orderly neighbor and Danny is the abrasive chaotic new guy next door. Fill in lots of pretty bad comedy in the middle and wasting the talents of the wives, and in the end both guys learn a lesson on getting along and learn to be more like the other guy to enjoy life. This one is okay to watch if you have kids, but it is a rental only. Not a good one for the collection.
