Movie Reviews of DeathtrapMovie Review: Keeps you guessing til the end. Summary: 4 Stars
After Christopher Reeve passed away from complications due to his fatal accident, I was curious to know more about his acting career beyond 'Superman'. In an article describing his acting history, 'Deathtrap' was mentioned as one of his most impressive efforts. I bought it without reading through all the reviews so had no idea of the plot. It is indeed a film with great acting, and a plot with many unpredictable twists and turns. Reeve gives an impressive performance as Cain's gay lover, and the plot has so many twists that I was guessing til the very end what the outcome would be. If you want to see a completely different example of Reeve's acting ability, this is 180 degrees different than 'Superman', and I recommend watching it.
Movie Review: A wonderfully clever comic thriller Summary: 4 Stars
Deathtrap is a truly underrated thriller. While it starts off slow considering most audience standards, it quickly dissolves into a clever, suspenseful, and ingenious comedy thriller. While the first act fares better than the second, the film is fun throughout, taking the audience on a ride of "Who is working against whom and why?" While not always surprising, it's an engrossing little puzzle to try and figure out, and the climax is a suspenseful nail biter. Ira Levin has brought us some true classics (The Stepford Wives, Rosemary's Baby) and this should be among them. It is a twisted good time. Highly recommended to mystery fans.
Movie Review: It was better the second time. Summary: 4 Stars
The movie based on Ira Levin's play is quite thrilling with two great actors, Caine and Reeves. The only real problem is the structure of the play itself. After a murder is committed in what would be the first act, there is more exposition at the beginning of Act 2, which after all the excitement of Act 1, makes the play and the movie seem boring. Actually a lot is being done in that time, and when viewing it the second time, I realized its importance and wasn't bored. It's a fun film with lots of twists.
Movie Review: Stage world adapted to cinema Summary: 4 Stars
There have been many attempts to adapt stage hits to the cinema medium. Deathtrap is so successful in adhereing to the Aristotelian limits of time and space. The small cast is perfect. Christopher Reeve introduces the fact of being gay with very subtle body language, a fact which soon becomes a major complication in the plot. The twists and turns keep the viewer involved but not too confused, up to the catharsis of the ending. Masterfully done.
Movie Review: superb Summary: 4 Stars
This movie was originally a play. It maintains this form, which makes the movie unique. If you have seen live plays... you will really enjoy that aspect of the film. Christopher Reeve and Michael Caine are also superb. The screenplay is tight and the lines are well crafted. The movie has shocking twists and no gore. For the price, this is one film worth taking a shot on and buying it unseen. I totally recomend buying this movie.
