Movie Reviews of DeathtrapMovie Review: Caine and Reeves - a dead cert Summary: 5 Stars
How does one go about describing the impact of Michael Caine and Christopher Reeves in this all time great light hearted thriller. I have seen this movie before but somehow the twists and turns of the plot caught me as much by surprise as the first time I viewed it. The acting kept me enthralled up to the last twist of the knife (so to say). I had actually forgotten how the movie ended so was really taken by surprise by the twist. Dyan Cannon as the naive wife who falls victim to treachery is a pleasure to watch. I was a little taken aback by the fact that the two male leads played the role of lovers and was amased that I had not noticed this before. Of course this was just another one of the twists and turns that the added to the highly complecated plot.
Of course a bonus was to see the wonderful Chritopher Reeves in his youthful form displaying the talent which we know he possessed.
This movie is well worth having in you collection as it is really a classic muder mystery plot.
Movie Review: FIENDISHLY CLEVER AND FUNNY TOO Summary: 5 Stars
If you remember that this delightful mystery/comedy was filmed in 1982, you can actually say this is a movie that was not too afraid to take risks. First of all, director Sidney Lumet keeps the majority of the action indoors and on the same set, but uses his camera to make us feel non-kinetic. And to have the studly Christopher Reeve (Superman himself) play a homsexual and actually kiss Michael Caine was a bold risk for both Mr. Reeve and the audience at that time. But DEATHTRAP has so many plot twists and turns, it's amazingly enjoyable, and I found Dyan Cannon's screaming wife a delight; I think it's one of her best performances. Ditto to Irene Worth as the so-called psychic who plays prominently in the film's denouement. Caine and Reeve are brilliant; what a shame Christopher didn't have a longer career to show us what a mature actor he could have become. In spite of its staginess, DEATHTRAP is delightful entertainment.
Movie Review: "Even a gifted director couldn't hurt it.." Summary: 5 Stars
Movies adapted from plays may not always be "cinematic" in the traditional sense because they tend to only need one set. However, they can be very fun to watch because they allow actors to have great dialogue. Deathtrap is one such movie. Michael Caine gives one of his best, funniest performances as a washed-up playwright driven to murder. It is great to watch a great actor when he is finally allowed to ACT. The same goes for Christopher Reeve, who made this movie right after Superman. Here he seems more gangly than a man of steel (his stage training shows a little bit though). If you are unfamiliar with the plot, I won't spoil it for you. It's just a joy to watch - great acting, great plot, and - most of all - great dialogue. The best I can say about this film is that it inspires me to write every time I see it.
Movie Review: NOT your predictable murder-mystery. Summary: 5 Stars
This is definitely the choice when you want an entertaining, non-violent [well, except for a murder, bondage, and an impressive collection of medieval weapons ..... okay, a LITTLE violent], movie that you do not want to miss a frame.
The majority of the movie is filmed on one set - the interior of a refurbished/restored windmill. Limited, unimaginative, right? Wrong! The simple murder-your-rich-wife-for-the-money plot turns, winds and flips into cunning complexity. Michael Caine masters his character. The interaction between Christopher Reeve and Caine is brilliant. Dyan Cannon portrays the meek, unassuming wife well, but try as I might, I could not empathize long for her. The storyline swept me into the next scene and the next and the next. Irene Worth is delightful as the quirky, psychic neighbor.
Movie Review: WITTY & TWISTED WHO-DUN-IT...JUST THE WAY SUSPENSE SHOULD BE Summary: 5 Stars
..Or come to think of it, it's not really a "who-dun-it" but a "who-dun-whom-first". One of those little hidden masterpieces of film-making!The theme can be summarized quite simply -- a dramatic semi-comedy about a playwright (Chris Reeves) trying to figure out how to keep his head above water after ideas run dry. But the simplicity pretty much ends there. The plot has a bunch of delectable twists until the finale, which is no less of a surprise itself. The acting is top-notch, Caine and Reeves are, well, Caine and Reeves -- marvellous talents. A word may be said for the DVD. The transfer of this classic mystery is quite amazing, if the cover didn't tell me this was 1982 I could easily have thought this is a recent movie. An absolute treat in every sense!
