Movie Reviews of Death at a Funeral

Movie Review: I about died laughing . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

It's a very funny film. If you're in the mood to laugh, go see this hysterical romp about a man trying to give his late father a dignfied funeral that quickly turns into a living nightmare. Great performances from the entire cast, especially Alan Tudyk (who reveals a very nice backside--I can say that on Amazon, can't I?--in case that may interest you; he also delivers a performance of comic perfection--I LOVED him), Daisy Donovan, Matthew MacFadyen and Peter Dinklage. If I laugh out loud during a film, that's a very good sign--and I was quite vocal during this flick. "Death at a Funeral" is a cross between an old-fashioned screwball comedy (think "Bringing Up Baby") and a pitch black comedy (think "Harold & Maude)--it's delightful--if you have this kind of twisted sense of humor. I do--and I highly recommend you go see this film right now or watch it when it comes out on DVD!

Movie Review: Hilarious Brit Wit--Too un-PC to make in America!
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this on a flight from Newark to Taiwan, and laughed and laughed and laughed. It starts out kind of slow, but builds into sheer hilarity. When my seatmate awoke and searched for a movie, I recommended it to him, and took pleasure in watching him laugh. More recently, I recommended it to my seatmate on a flight from New Delhi to Vienna, and she, too, howled. Then, I recommended it to friends, and they ALL reported back that they had the best laugh in years:"After you guys recommended it, I rented it for M and me. Best laugh in a long time (over a movie, anyway)." And, " Oh, if you really want a great laugh from a movie, rent "Death at a Funeral". British movie, just absolutely hilarious. K fell off the couch twice and T spit out his water a few times. Can't remember the last time that I got a true belly laugh from a movie." BUY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT!!!

Movie Review: Dark Comedy ~ Very Entertaining
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie takes place at a Funeral. Hence the description, DARK COMEDY ~ If you are unable to find humor in this situation, then you will NOT like this movie. HOWEVER, if you realize that in every situation, humor can and does exist, then you will be in for a very enjoyable 91 minutes.

The parts are expertly played by a superb cast. The script is witty and smart and the story is very well presented. This movie was recomended to me, while at the same moment, someone else who watched it, told me it was terrible. So, to qualify my taste, these are Dark Comedies that I have enjoyed watching in the past: "Head Above Water" ~ "Death Becomes Her" ~ "Little Nicky" ~ "Daddy's Dying".

So, if you share my taste, you will want to watch this movie. And if you liked this movie, you'll probably enjoy the ones listed above... Have fun!

Movie Review: Only the British 5 Stars

can turn a somber occasion into a laugh riot! Absolutely one of the funniest comedies I've seen in years. The Brits really know how to make fun of themselves and make people laugh all over the World. I laughed so uncontrollably loud, my neighbors thought I was going crazy in this Frank Oz directed movie. The ongoing "Valium" gag was the real clincher in this movie; affecting Alan Tudyk's (Firefly, 3:10 To Yuma, Knocked Up) "Simon" to Peter Vaughn's "Uncle Alfie." Peter Dinklage (In Bruges, 30 Rock, Nip/Tuck) adds fire to the Valium-induced high-jinks. Andy Nyman as Howard was uproariously funny. Bang-Bang laughs from the improbable happenings at a funeral service. Matthew MacFayden as "Daniel," the long-suffering son, trying to keep order and decorum at his Dad's funeral, was the sinking sand amongst the solid rocks in attendance. Too funny.

Movie Review: My Current Favorite Comedy
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie made me laugh until I cried. It's really zany, stupid humor. Not like Dumb and Dumber but absurd, mixed up stuff. Maybe more like, A Fish Called Wanda. This is my kind of humor, even though I had to turn the English captions on the first few times I watched it. I'm not good with British accents. A friend of mine once told me that the British find death really funny. Don't know if that's true, but this movie kind of supports that idea. Of course, part of the hilarity is that it all happens during a very serious event, a funeral, when you're not supposed to be laughing. Even though it deals with death, it's not macabre. I saw the ad for an American version coming out with a largely African American cast. Don't think the American version will be able to pull it off as well, but I'll probably check that one out, too.
