Movie Reviews of Dean Martin: That's Amore

Movie Review: Absolutely fantastic
Summary: 5 Stars

The only complaint is that it is too short.

Movie Review: The Best Video/DVD Available of Dean Martin Singing
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a string of mostly color clips of Dean Martin's singing segments from his popular Dean Martin Show. (The clip of Dean singing the title song "That's Amore" is in black and white.)

Typically, each song begins with Dean bounding down the staircase and walking over to the TV studio set of his "bachelor pad" apartment.

In between the clips of Dean singing, Greg Garrison, the producer/director of the Dean Martin Show gushes about Dean's talent--but doesn't give much real insight into the man or provide many anecdotes.

Personally, I would have preferred to have the option to just watch the string of clips of Dean singing songs without Garrison's commentary in between. Also, it would have been nice to see Dean do more duets-- as the video/dvd is almost exclusively all Dean. A longer DVD would have been nice as well.

There are 3 songs filmed in black and white that are deemed extras on the DVD.

In all, this is by far the best video recording of Dean Martin just straight-on singing that is available to date. It is similar, but superior to the DVD "Memories Are Made of This" which is entirely in black and white and with a narrator that has no personal connection to Dean.

Movie Review: Dino at his best...
Summary: 4 Stars

Stunning stuff that makes you ache to see more of this series on dvd. Would be wonderful to see the series - or 'Best of...' given the same loving treatment lavished on the Judy Garland shows by Pioneer. The picture and sound in the Dino shows is poor in comparison to the 1963 Garland shows. However, Dino and the musical direction are superb. I love the simplicity of it all: all songs are delivered straight to camera in medium to full close-up, no cuts or irritating dancers. Nothing else is required with a performer of Dino's grace and naturalness.
Apart from a wonderful compilation, featuring mostly comedy and guest duets, that I saw on British TV in the late 70's, this is all I have ever seen of Dino's show and I just want to see MORE.
The dvd is only marred by the fact that songs are not individually chaptered so you get lost as you try to skip the rather too many and lengthy (for my taste) contributions from the producer/director. Having said that, he must have been a genius to have come up with a show of this quality.

Movie Review: That's Amore'
Summary: 4 Stars

If Dean Martin's voice isn't enough for your memories, watch this DVD, oooooooooh "Memories are Made of This". I was in my preteens when I would watch my mother swoon over this man as we sat in the livingroom on Thursday evenings. Oh the simple days. I purchased this DVD to bring back those memories of the simple, fun, carefree lifestyle. Unlike today which is now so polictically correct. Greg Garrison explains the various ways Dean comes down the staircase to the special friendship they had. My special highlight is when Dean is singing Moon River makes the mistake in the lyrics.

I enjoy this DVD so much and will continue to add such to my future COPA room.

Movie Review: The King of Cool
Summary: 4 Stars

Dean Martin is, was and shall ever be the epitome of cool. The man's warmth and good humor just shines through in this collection. This was a man who was truly having a kick doing what he did and he shared that fun with his audience. Even when the material is questionable, such as the uptempo arrangement on "Old Man River," Dino lets us in on the joke.

The video and audio could be better, but, hey, this is videotape that's over thirty years old. My only real gripe is that the songs are not individually chaptered.

If you are too young to remember Dean's show and know him only from his films, give this DVD a try. You're in for a treat!
