Movie Reviews of Dead Ringer

Movie Review: A little lurid, a little over-the-top, but always entertaining
Summary: 4 Stars

A little noirish, a little trashy, "Dead Ringer" is solid fun, and can proudly take its place next to other films in Bette Davis' early 60's "thriller/shocker" period like "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" and "Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte". While not as polished as those other films, this in-your-face gem has much to recommend it: Bette Davis in dual twin-sister roles, some fine supporting performances, and even a little genuine psychological complexity, as the story doesn't go the simple good twin/bad twin route, but shows two characters with both positive and negative traits (as well as those pesky fatal flaws that will inevitably bite one on the bottom). An added bonus is a fine score by classical music conductor Andre Previn, which holds the whole work together.

The widescreen image features a sharp black-and-white print and crisp sound, further enhancing the viewing experience. Extras include a commentary track with film scholar Boze Hadleigh, a short but informative discussion of the film by Mr. Hadleigh, the film's trailer, and one or two other short items of interest.

In the end, I agree with Mr. Hadleigh that "Dead Ringer" may not be one of the greats among Ms. Davis' film legacy, but it's a good, solid entry, especially considering the lack of truly first-rate material that was offered to the aging film legend by the time the 1960's rolled around. In any event, you shouldn't hesitate to give this one a whirl if you enjoy discovering or rediscovering the films of our classic actors and actresses.

Movie Review: Another Bette Davis gem from the 1960's....
Summary: 4 Stars

I've always been a big fan of Bette Davis's work(she's from my hometown Lowell, Ma) and really enjoyed "Whatever happened to Baby Jane"?, "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" and "The Nanny". I had somehow missed this little gem of of a duel role for Bette Davis. Well worth watching as the technology was just arriving back in the 1960's and this thriller of movie is well acted, black and black,
great sets, just has something to it that few can create this days.
Just sit back and enjoy two Bette's for the price of one!

Movie Review: Terrific Davis
Summary: 4 Stars

All the reviewers here can tell you the plot. I, for one, watched 'Dead Ringer' because it is a Davis film. It's surprisingly a very entertaining movie with Davis giving a rock steady controlled performance. I just remembered it as camp! What we didn't need, and I'm sure Davis and directer Henried knew this, was another mad scene performance. I also enjoyed Davis working with her actor cronies Karl Malden and now directer Paul Henried.
There was no blood in 1964 so it's a rather clean shot gun murder.

Movie Review: Another Bette Davis Classic that does well
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a pretty good performance by Bette Davis, Karl Malden in a movie that features a "poor twin" and a "rich twin". The "poor twin" kills the "rich twin" and takes over her life.

Pretty similar to another movie called "Stolen Life" that explores the same theme, except she takes over the twins life after an accident, not after killing her.

Although not one of her best, it is still a good watch and a good performance by both actors.

Movie Review: Loved it!
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a Bette Davis fan to the core. This was an excellent movie. It is a suspenseful movie and with a surprise ending. Watching Bette Davis play both roles as two sisters was amazing. I loved every minute of it.
