Movie Reviews of Dead ReckoningMovie Review: Tense thriller with plenty of surprises Summary: 5 Stars
This 1947 film starring Humphrey Bogart and Lizabeth Scott is a fine example of film noir at its best. It is one of Bogart's best and I rank it at almost as good as The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep.
The time of the film is near the end of World War II. Captain "Rip" Murdock (Bogart) is seeking to find out why his army pal Sgt. Johnny Drake has chosen to disappear rather than receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.
He trails Johnny to Gulf City USA. When he gets there, he finds that Johnny expected him, but he can find no trace of Johnny. Instead, he finds more mysteries and a very intriguing woman, Coral Chandler (Scott).
Rip falls in love with Coral and the feeling is mutual. The romance between Bogart and Scott is excellent and will remind viewers of the relationship between Bogart and Bacall, and one has to wonder why Lauren Bacall was not in this film.
There are also some historical shots in the film. The actual city is not named but the shots were taken in the late 1940s. If anyone knows the actual city, I'd love to know.
This is a tense thriller with plenty of surprises.
Movie Review: one of the best femme fatal noirs Summary: 5 Stars
There is no question in my mind that this noir includes Lisabeth Scott's best performance as a femme fatal. The movie is saturated with the post war atmosphere of optimism-pessimism, when the scars of the war were still fresh. There is something disturbing in the story where our femme fatal is involved in pre war murder mystery, and post war intrigue and horrible death. The flash backs and nightclub atmosphere are a delight for any noir lover.
Movie Review: With a name like Rip Murdoch how can you go wrong? Summary: 5 Stars
I watched this flick back to back with "The Maltese Falcon", and I must say, "Dead Reckoning" was MUCH more enjoyable. Outside of Bogey's inherent coolness, there wasn't much else in "The Maltese Falcon" to hold my interest. "Dead Reckoning" was much grittier, and I think, much more true to the essence of film noir. To top it off, you get lots of colorful banter and the sultry Lizabeth Scott!
Movie Review: Bogart at his best ! Summary: 5 Stars
I have close to 30 Bogart movies on DVD/VHS and "Dead Reckoning" may be
my favorite, behind "The Big Sleep" only !
The noir style along with the best dialogue I have ever heard and it doesn't get much better than Lizabeth Scott.
Always wondered what this movie would have been like with Lauren Bacall.
A Bogart masterpiece !
Movie Review: Great movie! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a big Bogart fan, but this is one I'd never seen before. Lizabeth Scott's hair, makeup, basically entire look was reminiscent of Lauren Bacall in "To Have and Have Not." Bogart was perfect -- great flick!
