Movie Reviews of Dead Man WalkingMovie Review: every person need only ask for redemption from their heart, Summary: 5 Stars
Doing good for goodness sakes. Sister prejean exemplifies the teachings of Jesus and of how Christians should live their lives by. This movie doesn't preach, nor does it necessarily feed you a messege. Every side is seen, and we also sympathize with each side. We grieve the loss of a son and a daughter of the victim, and we can't help but feel saddened by the fate of Matthew Poncelete. It's an odd feeling to sympathize with a man who, without a doubt, is deserving of the punishment he's about to recieve. But this movie doesn't get stuck with captial punishment issue. It certainly opens up the dialogue for people for and against death penalty, but it doesn't swing its influence one way or the other. We already realize his death is coming, and instead of forcing the tear out of us by making the movie the 'Hollywood' way (last minute pardon, miracles saves Matthew's life, ect.), it instead takes a spiritual path. The movie is about salvation and redemption of a sinner, and gives hope that no one is too far gone for forgiveness. All this, without an ounce of feeling like a Christian movie. Simply powerful.
Movie Review: An Extremely Thought-Provoking Film Summary: 5 Stars
In addition to the acting performances, this film's excellence resides in the way it makes you contemplate the death penalty from both points of view. The shifts between the crime scene, the perpetrator, and the nun's explorations of the scenario propagate attitude changes with every new scene. You can see the horrible crime that was committed, and then you're made to consider the fact that further death -- executing the murderer -- will not really solve anything... and then, you sense the victim's family's desire to see their daughter's killer punished completely. I was a against the death penalty until a friend of mine was needlessly killed by two guys leaving a robbery scene -- my friend's death was such an unnecessary waste, that I wanted the two killers to be exterminated. "Dead Man Walking" provides similar changes of perspective -- it may change the opinion you presently hold, regardless of whether you're for or against capital punishment. It's a great movie to watch, and then to think about, to contemplate as deeply as you can.
Movie Review: Poignant drama with peaks and lows! Summary: 5 Stars
This film was the supreme test to Susan Sarandon and her best achievement in her career. In this role as nun she gave a masterful class of facial expression and body language , having in mind she had the camera very close the ninety five per cent of the time. Furthermore I guess the real intention of this approach was accent the dramatis personae between these two souls so opposite in principles and ethics.
The rhythmic pulse is extremely peaceful making the film was a bit overlong with unnecessary overdramatic concessions. Sean Penn faced to my mind the most difficult role in his career and his slow and progressive transformation through the clever dialogues will reveal something you anticipate.
This delicate theme about the death execution had never focused with admirable realism. And may be with the honorable exception of In cold blood , the American Cinema never before reached such status level in this issue.
Movie Review: Sean Penn denied of Oscar Summary: 5 Stars
Don't get me wrong, I love this movie. But my God, Sean Penn acted Susan Sarandon right off the screen, yet she won an Oscar and he didn't. In fact, Sarandon's performance is not all that good, and at times greatly exaggerated. Yet Penn gave one of the great performances in recent memory, but because he's been labeled as a "Hollywood Bad Boy," he gets no recognition. And because Sarandon is married to the director and spouts a lot of religious stuff and cries, she gets an Oscar. It's not right. Sean Penn is long overdue for recognition: just check out some of his other films -- "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "Bad Boys," "The Falcon and the Snowman," "At Close Range," "Colors," "State of Grace," "Carlito's Way," "Hurlyburly," "The Thin Red Line," "Sweet and Lowdown" -- get the point?
Movie Review: brilliant Summary: 5 Stars
I have never written an online review before. Also, Sean Penn and Sarandon and Tim Robbins have definitely gotten on my nerves in the past. Having said all that, this is a BRILLIANT movie. Sean Penn gives the finest performace, undoubtedly, of his life. He had me in tears for pretty much the whole movie. Susan S is also just amazing, as it director Tim Robbins. Absolutely nothing bad can be said about this movie. It's not overtly political in anyway. But also keep in mind that every form of human expression IS political to some degree. How can it not be?
Sean Penn is my new hero, simply by virtue of this movie. Honestly I have never been impressed with him in the past. Maybe I was just missing something. But I have never seen a better onscreen performance than the one he gave.
See it. You'll be an emotional basketcase afterwards, but you will appreciate this movie.
