Movie Reviews of David and BathshebaMovie Review: real quality, intelligent script, well realized Summary: 5 Stars
This is like a good stage play. The screen writer has created a small masterpiece. Each line reveals some aspect of Israelite culture as well as developing the character and advancing the plot. Not a word is wasted; and the actors, especially Peck, express the script effectively by using restraint. What others have called "stiff" performances are really spare and subtle. It never devolves into the cheap splashy schmaltz of other epics of the era. In the death scene of her child, Hayward never over-emotes, but without even seeing her face, her muffled sobs by the cradle are more moving than over-acting would have been. The score is very good, as are the costumes and sets, but again, all are used with restraint, to serve the story, and not overshadow it. The film respects the script, which in turn respects its source. The understated dialogue and Peck's wonderful face express much; his human imperfection, and his complex attitude toward Hebrew beliefs and Laws, even Israel's relations with other nations, and with Nature itself. A central theme is the dissapointment and cynicism of adulthood and nostalgia for lost innocence. It resolves with a satisfying, if typical, redemptive ending; done with good taste. Watch for the great Gwen Verdon in the dance scene.
Movie Review: Biblical movies Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this DVD of 'David and Bathsheba' so that I could use clips of it in my history class at the Community College. The VHS part ate my tapes, so I needed a DVD quickly and Amazon was there. Amazon did an excellent job in shipping this order, along with three other DVDs in a very short period of time. Besides, this is one of those great Biblical epics that seems to be missing from Hollywood in this day and era. Thanks. B.L.
Movie Review: One of Alfred Newman's finest scores Summary: 5 Stars
If for no other reason than Alfred Newman's wonderful music you should see this movie. Newman was the head of the 20th Century Fox music department during it's glory days. He also conducted the scores that he composed. Newman's scores draw the audience into the drama, making them care for the characters. I highly recommend this DVD for the Newman score. The story, acting, direction, costumes, etc. are very entertaining, as well.
Movie Review: Hollywood At it's Best Summary: 5 Stars
For all those people who say all movies are junk, try this one it's not. Yes it's not totally acurate, but then who cares with Gregory Peck and Susan Hayworth.
If you are to young to know who they are, give them a chance. They were only the top in Hollywood for over 30 years.
Movie Review: What an incredible cast. Summary: 5 Stars
This was a big budget movie for way back when. The script and actors were all incredible. The soundtrack was perfect as well. The classic Biblical story of David and Bathsheba is a perfect example of the love and forgiveness that God has for mankind. Very inspirational.
