Movie Reviews of David Bowie - Best of BowieMovie Review: More than expected Summary: 5 Stars
This is a Bowie DVD that is actually clear and of great quality. For those poor souls who bought the Glass Spider or Serious Moonlight DVD I'm sure you haven't noticed much difference from the VHS. This DVD is extra special because of the more recent videos that never made it to USA TV and the stunning clarity of the older material. Yes, LIFE ON MARS is supposed to look like that! We have all years represented here but we still have some of the more oscure stuff missing like DB's '80's soundtrack work with Pat Metheny or Raymond Briggs. Maybe those recordings are owned by someone else and will never see a real release. Now as far as Easter Eggs go...I won't say WHERE but I will say WHAT: full 20 minute Jazzin' For Blue Jean video promo, Russell Harty interview, MTV promo club version of Blue Jean (alternate video), Day In Day Out (extended dance mix video),Seven Years in Tibet (mandarin Version video), Survive (Live paris '99 and more to be discovered. Remember you have 2 discs here...there will be a lot!!
Movie Review: Bowie is the best Summary: 5 Stars
I've enjoyed this 2-disc DVD set for many years now. The collection of music videos and live performances is just lovely. It's especially fun to see David progress through his many on-stage personalities, from the early performances like "Five Years" with his still-blond hair and green jumpsuit, to "John, I'm Only Dancing" and "Young Americans" when he often lacked eyebrows and donned a variety of creative makeup and accessories, to his "Thin White Duke" phase, the happy pop persona of the 1980s, spiky hair and chin-beard of the 1990s, and finally an older, slightly calmer Bowie in "Thursday's Child" and "Survive". Throughout the decades of music represented here, Bowie remains both innovative and entertaining. Easter eggs on DVDs can be a pain to find, but some of these are worth it, particularly the featurette for the song "Blue Jean". I had no idea that this existed!
Bowie fans young and old should enjoy this DVD for its variety of performances and sheer entertainment value.
Movie Review: All the different Bowies... Summary: 5 Stars
This is over three-and-a-half hours in length, and like Bowie's career itself, it's a pretty mixed bag: not in terms of quality, but of content. There's early pseudo-folk Bowie, in some rather tinny BBC recordings; pseudo-blue-eyed-soul Bowie, in some rather cheesy 70's videos; German-style electro-Bowie, ditto; daffy disco Bowie, in some rather cheesy 80's videos; thrash Bowie; mellow(er) modern Bowie; and probably a few Bowies I've missed.Highlighted throughout though is the sheer creativity that Bowie has exhibited throughout his career. He's always been exploring, always creating something new, always (um, except for that embarrassing disco stuff) going his own way and leading where most dared not follow. And it's all presented here in this video collection, right up to material from "hours...". Sometimes the videos themselves reflect their vintage, but this is a must-have for any Bowie fan. A great summary of his career, and fun to watch and hear.
Movie Review: A Well-Rounded Collection of Bowie's Career Summary: 5 Stars
Just about every video you could possibly think of, from Heroes and Oh! You Pretty things to Thursday's Child and Heart's Filthy Lesson - they're all here.
This collection, consisting of two DVDs, very adequately showcases Bowie's magnificent transformations from folky to glam star to 80s pop icon to the weird, twisted worlds of his mid-90s video endeavors.
His music, as always, is nearly flawless, and paired with his famous love of stunning visuals, this collection never fails to impress.
If you are a long-time Bowie fan, or even a new fan, this collection greatly heightens one's appreciation of the man behind so many faces and personalities. For, of course, Bowie has always been about visuals as well as his music, and his videos really show his genius use of visuals to portray the messages in his songs. A magnificent, must-own video collection for any fan.
Movie Review: Bowie blows my mind Summary: 5 Stars
I'm sort of an emerging Bowie fan... I've only just begun to compile a collection...
I found this DVD set at the video store and rented it on a whim, and all I can say is...
Wow.
Maybe it doesn't contain the best of the best, but the videos presented in this set are pretty amazing, from the earlier years (Rebel, Rebel and Drive-in Saturday) to the middle (Dancing in the Street with Mick Jagger, Time Will Crawl, and Fame) to the latest (Thursdays Child, Survive)... my mind was blown.
This man is one of the most singular charismatic people in existance. His constant reinventions of himself and his music continue to thrill me with each turn.
My favorites (and I'm weird, so don't get uppity... I know they're not the most popular) are "Time Will Crawl" and the easter egg live version of "Survive".
