Movie Reviews of Dark StarMovie Review: Not For Everyone... Summary: 5 Stars
...but if you've got that certain strange *kink* in your sense of humor, the one that makes you love Douglas Adams, no-budget monster flicks, bizarre midnight matinees, etc. you just might love this. Some people claim that it's slow...and if you aren't receptive to this sort of dead-pan ridiculous humor, then I guess it is. But if you appreciate the thought of 3 spaced-out losers drifting forgotten in space, looking for planets to blow up just to kill the boredom, smoking cigarettes and discussing philosophy with tempermental "smart" bombs...it makes a fun evening.I say, "Cool!"
Movie Review: A gem in the rough is still a gem Summary: 5 Stars
What's also amazing is the sensitivity to characters and personalities in this movie. Each crew member is different, and has his own unique coping mechanisms (or none at all) for the sheer boredom of space. The ongoing diary of Bill Froop is a hilarious peek into one character's personal journey and transformation. You'll find a much more intriguing storyline here than in any of the last few Star Trek movies combined - unless you're a baby boomer reminiscing about your Half Moon Bay hippy commune days, that is. Make a big batch of popcorn and settle in for a lot of fun!
Movie Review: Dark Star Shines A Bright Light Summary: 5 Stars
Who says you have to have a big budget to make a very funny 70's Sci-Fi movie spoof. The instrument panel on the spacecraft was egg cartons with lighting underneath. I have not seen many films before or since where the space alien is an oversized beach ball. And, as a surfer, I loved the ending. But I'm not telling. If you want to know how it ends, buy the DVD.
This would be a cult classic even if it had not been done by John Carpenter. Brian Narelle is now an Emmy award winning television writer and an illustrator/cartoonist.
Movie Review: Dark Star Summary: 5 Stars
This cult classic from the 70's is a tongue-in-cheek science fiction spoof. It's also one of the lowest budget productions I've ever seen (the "alien" is a beachball. No kidding - a real beachball!) The animations are intentionally unrealistic - reminiscent of some of the worst early Star Trek animations - but charming for the same reason. The "action" is a bit slow which adds to the effect. I loved this movie when I saw it in the 70's and it's great to see it back on DVD. Highly recommended for those with a warped enough sense of humor.
Movie Review: A MUST SEE FOR ALL SCI-FI FANS Summary: 5 Stars
This was the hit of the MOVIE ROOM AT THE WORLD SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION-SEPT 1976 IN KANSAS CITY.This was one of over 70 movies over the five day Convention that featured some of the only prints remaining that were kept in the underground vaults in Kansas. It was the only one that was played more than one time-I believe five is correct, but it's been a long time since then. My favorite part is the big orange beach ball monster. This movie is the best I've seen for the small change spent to make it.Best chuckle for the buck by far.
