Movie Reviews of Dark Star

Movie Review: A funny, clever spoof of space movies!
Summary: 5 Stars

I know that this movie isn't for everybody, but I knew, after my first viewing, that if I could find a man who found this movie to be as funny as I did, that we would be a perfect match (and I did, and it is!). Whenever I hear those magic words, "It it time to feed the alien," I immediately begin to laugh because I know that I am about to be thoroughly entertained with what, I believe, is the funniest five-minutes in movie history! I don't normally enjoy movie "spoofs," but this movie does it with what I describe as subtle absurdity, rather than slapstick, and it works! Comedy sci-fi is quite rare, and fans of Red Dwarf, I believe, will find this movie to be an irresistable rare find.

Movie Review: Some folks should do some homework
Summary: 5 Stars

I've noticed many of the reviews for this little gem have been positive. However, to the folks who bagged on it, perhaps they should do a little reading about the history of the film and then look at it from that perspective.

The movie was the final USC film project of John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon and has excellent production design by Ron Cobb (who went on to other classics like Blade Runner). It was originally about 45 minutes long, but Jack Harris provided funds to add footage so that it could make the rounds at drive-ins. So, yes the film is low budget. But, the work and effort that went into shows through every frame.

Yes, it was a beach ball. Its a joke. Get it.

Movie Review: Dark Star- The Other One
Summary: 5 Stars

"Dark Star" isn't a movie version of the beloved Grateful Dead song (just as "The Passenger" isn't a Phil Lesh biopic). It's John Carpenter's directorial debut, a darkly hilarious comedy about boredom in space. It was made on a shoestring budget, and rightly shines as a low-budget classic. A crew of planet destroyers have gotten incredibly bored. One longs for surfing. Another is in the deep freeze. Yet another contends with an alien that looks like a giant inflatable beach ball. There's an angsty bomb.

"Dark Star" doesn't idealize life in deep space. It's a look at boredom, existential and otherwise. It's funny as well. Let it shine!

Movie Review: Great movie
Summary: 5 Stars

Knowing it was a glorified student film before I watched it, my expectations for Dark Star weren't very high. However, I was surprised by the script and subtle humor in the movie, and the small details and creative moviemaking used to make up for the low budget.

It wasn't a perfect movie, but its freshness and creativity make up for its flaws. Obviously Carpenter, O'Bannon, etc., all went on to have great careers, and made some great movies.

If you like "first movies", sci-fi, fantasy, horror, or any of the other work put out by the people involved in this movie, you should end up liking Dark Star. I thought it was great.

Movie Review: Hard SF fans
Summary: 5 Stars

This film answers the question what do you do when your crew was scraped up from the people rejected for spaceflight, you are light years from home, your smart bombs are smarting off, a captured alien gets out of his pen, and your ship is falling apart.

It is a important film to see, not for the flashy special effects, there aren't any, but for the characterizations and plot lines. It is the obverse of the spit and polish of many SF films.

This does not portray the best and brightest in space, its more like putting fruits and nuts in a can and sending it into deep space for a mission nobody really cares about anymore.
