Movie Reviews of Dark StarMovie Review: Boredom Has never been so funny!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Made with their own money! John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon made this quite bizarre tale of boredom in space. The crews mission is to blow up planets but other than that they have no life, they have been doing this for so many years they can't even remember their first names. Their captain is dead, well frozen!, They have a beach ball for a pet, and their ship is falling apart. One of the most interesting bits in the film is when they have to philosophise with a talking bomb to stop it from blowing up the ship. The score is excellent and the special effects....well they were made on the cheap. :)Jack Harris wanted the original college film to be extended to 90 minutes, so that he could release it. So, John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon completed the film but unfortunately their friendship did not survive the involvement of Jack Harris.
Movie Review: ultimate cult movie - the best version available Summary: 5 Stars
PICTURE QUALITY (2/5 STARS) No doubt this release is the best available yet. Don't expect too much though. Picture is without flickers or grain but unsharp throughout the whole film.SOUND QUALITY (2/5 STARS) Dolby Digital 5.1 remix - terrible audio quality; often very hard to understand anything. This is because of the source material. Surround effects are poorly. EXTRAS (2/5 STARS) This bomb bay is virtually empty: a trailer and biographies. SPECIAL/UNIQUE ON THIS DVD RELEASE: - Widescreen letterbox format - Dolby Digital 5.1 remix - theatrical release and Director's Cut (shorter, as-intended-version) - mind the low price: it's worth a try! COMMENT: This movie is cult - never mind the quality of its source, just tune in to the most extraordinary space adventure ever!
Movie Review: Phenomenology has never been so funny! Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw this movie in the theaters (with the "Hardware Wars" short) and couldn't stop laughing. The burgeoning genius of Carpenter and O'Bannon is unsullied by big budgets full of perfect special effects and surround sound. The very crudity of the props, special effects, and visuals makes you think maybe you could have made this film (if only you were that imaginative). Though some may criticize the acting, it fits perfectly in the period, and anyway, comedy (dark or otherwise) is all about timing, not emotional nuance...("one day they'll see these tapes and then they'll be sorry!...) Granted, it helps to have grown up in during the development of the modern science fiction space opera, but if my 13-year old son can like it, so can you!
Movie Review: Time to feed the Alien Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is as fresh and funny as it was when it was first released. The fact that this was a student film makes its high quality all the more amazing and commendable. There is so much to admire about DARK STAR i don't know where to begin: The talking bombs, the beach-ball alien, the whole gonzo concept of astronauts going insane after being kept in space for way too long, the excellent model effects and optical work, the crazily inventive low-budget sets, the familar rumble of Carpenter's synth score, the obviously stoned actors.
For a no-budget project made by a bunch of pot-head college kids over 30 yrs ago, DARK STAR has more going for it than all of Holywood's so-called high concept blockbusters put together.
Movie Review: In Space, No One Can Hear You Yawn... Summary: 5 Stars
DARK STAR is the most un-romantic, stark, hysterical vision of space exploration ever filmed. Carpenter and O'bannon capture the suffocating boredom perfectly! After floating around in deep space for 20 years, even blowing up entire planets has become dull routine. The crew are sick of space, sick of each other, and have turned into apathetic numbskulls. The ship computer is a female voice of monotony. The planet-destroying bombs (yep, they talk too) are loopy, cheerful drones. Only when pending disaster threatens everyone aboard is any excitement forced into these poor shmucks' lives! Watch for the beachball alien. He's a trip! Check this out if you're tired of all the meaningless outerspace spectaculars of our day...
