Movie Reviews of Dark Star

Movie Review: Cult classic, off the wall, Carpenter's finest
Summary: 5 Stars

So, I thought I would show this movie to my fiancee and a friend of hers, both of whom I would definitely say are picky and typically like the empty flashy movies that draw in money, but have no substance. She was laughing very loudly by the end (and so was her friend, by the way).

John Carpenter may be known for his other really big hits (Halloween, In the Mouth of Madness [his best, in my opinion], or Vampires), but before fame arrived, he was a student. This was his film. Along with co-conspirator Dan O'Bannon, the two made this student film with zero budget (the chest plate on the star suit is a muffin pan), until it was viewed by a producer. $60,000 and a few extra scenes later, it was released and immediately picked up a cult following. I first saw it on PBS, back in the days when they showed such classic films.

Funny, irreverent, and strikingly enough, deep and meaningful. Don't look for famous actors here, go rent a Bond flick for that. Look for insight into the human spirit, the plight of the isolated, and one of the most humorous sci-fi movies ever made! I highly recommend it for fans of a good comedy or science fiction flick. You won't be disappointed!

Movie Review: Dark Star DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

Dark Star is a 1974 science fiction classic, set in the distant future.
The story takes place upon a futuristic scout ship that goes exploring for unstable planets to blow up, so that these planets will not be accidentally colonized . They use intelligent Exponential Thermosteller Bombs and get into an argument with one , after an accident during an asteroid storm. The crew members are hilarious !
It is very funny , in a dark humor sort of way.
This DVD comes with the theatrical version and the Special Edition, which is about 15 minutes shorter than the version the producer, Jack Harris, insisted that John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon add to the film before releasing it to the theaters through Bryanston Pictures. The special Edition is a better quality recording that removes the added 15 minutes.
I highly recommend these films to fans of science Fiction and Comedy, alike. Out of production, this DVD is becoming difficult to obtain, so get it if you can. I'm glad that I found my copy. I can understand why it is considered a "cult classic" .

Movie Review: A Great Movie with a very LOW budget!
Summary: 5 Stars

It's amazing what they did on this movie with a budget of only $55,000! For a big production, $55,000 is probably how much they pay for one of the main actors hairbrush!

This was Dan O'Bannon's first production, he later went on to write the script for Alien and many other sci-fi films. Dan plays the character Pinback who wants to improve morale on the ship, but the others won't cooperate. The sequence with Pinback and the alien pet is one of the best scenes.

Dark Star was released in 1974, but virtually nobody came. After the movies premere, Dan O'Bannon went to a local theater and asked the manager how long the line was to see the movie Dark Star. The manager wryly replied "What Line?", then Dan became heartbroken and stopped writing movies until he got the opportunity to write the script for Alien.

Dark Star, in many ways, continues to be the most popular cult sci-fi movie ever filmed. It was also the lowest budget sci-fi movie that more than fully recovered the budget expenses in less than a week!

Movie Review: Come in Bomb Number 20, Your Time is UP!
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this film years ago on T.V. and it tickled my insanity bone no end. Quite simply it is a classic to end all classics, from the first moment you meet the four man crew on a 20 year mission who are as dysfunctional as they come, to the Captain who's dead but not really dead because his head is kept alive and he talks to the crew, not mention the suicidal Bomb No: 20 that wants to end it all and has to be talked out of detonating itself every so often.

This is a movie that is an aquired taste, and you have to appreciate the tongue in cheek, the black humour and the total mickey of all things science fiction.

It is quirky, crass, rude and totally irreverent, this is John Carpenter's brilliant portrayal of life above and beyond. The ending is superb with the bomb getting its wish to end it all, and a crew member finding out that there is nothing cooler in the universe than using the bomb as a giant skateboard. Wonderful, wonderful pulp science fiction that is ludicrous as it is poignant.

Movie Review: In the beginning there was darkness.
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie stands on its own as an archetypal story. Yes you can compare some scenes of this movie to other movies and say "This is a parity" of an other movie. Yet if you look at the big picture you will see there is no forced dialog or plots to do such parity. This is the real space, the one that grates on your nerves after 20 years in space. You learn the politics of procurement, the virtues of independent thinking, and what it is like to have a pet.

Very few movies nowadays question existence its self. And along with the profound questions that makes science fiction worth watching, there are great songs and mental images of the sea. Let's cut to the chase this is a funny movie that is over before you are ready.

My cat looks just as round and acts the same way as the alien.
