Movie Review: Great fun, but historically inaccurate

Dark Shadows is great fun. I enjoyed the series as a child, and I am enjoying it again on DVD.
Some previous reviews have extolled the historical accuracy of the part of the story that takes place in 1795. There is, however, a glaring historical inaccuracy in the part of the story about Victoria being accused of witchcraft, and bringing in the Reverend Trask from Salem to examine her.
The Salem Witch Trials took place from 1692 to 1693. The last witch trial in the world was held in 1782 in Switzerland. So the story taking place in 1795 is about a century out of date in having a witch hunter brought in from Salem. It is also over a decade out of date with regard to witch trials world wide.
A previous reviewer states that "Vicki's response to Trask is foolish, but understandable -- up to a point. In #385, Vicki SHOULD play along and pretend to be exorcised. However, someone from the present might not realize they take this witchcraft stuff SERIOUSLY in 1795." Although it is true that Vicki was foolish not to play along in the logic of the story, perhaps Vicki knew her real world history better than the writers, and apparently some viewers, of Dark Shadows.
Despite its historical inaccuracy, the witch hunt story is entertaining, and the Reverend Trask character introduced in this story is an interesting one.
The latter episodes of Collection 4 and the episodes of Collection 5 with the introduction and continuation of the 1795 story are noticeably better than the previous episodes of Dark Shadows in my opinion. This is largely due to the introduction of Angelique whose machinations propel the story at a greater pace and with more interesting twists and turns than was the case in earlier episodes.

With its alluring tales of Gothic mystery and supernatural intrigue, Dark Shadows became one of the most popular daytime series of all time. Since first airing on ABC-TV from 1966-71, Dark Shadows has earned the reputation as being one of the most unusual and enduring programs in television history. The character of Barnabas Collins, a guilt-ridden 175 year-old vampire, brought the show tremendous success.In 1795, the beautiful and jealous witch Angelique attempts to destroy Barnabas' romance with his fiance, Josette DuPres. She enslaves Collins family servant Ben Stokes to assist her evil plans. Abigail Collins and Natalie DuPres find evidence they believe proves Victoria Winters is a witch. The family moves into the newly-built Collinwood mansion and the fanatical witch-hunting Reverend Trask is summoned to exorcise the Old House. A vengeful Angelique places a vampire curse on Barnabas.
