Movie Reviews of Dark Passage (Snap Case)

Movie Review: Bogart, Bacall and Screen Magic
Summary: 5 Stars

Now married, and having made two successful films together, that dynamic duo of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall returned to work their unique blend of screen magic again in the 1947 release "Dark Passage" directed by Delmer Daves.

The film is further enhanced by the shadowy and darkened film noir hues and enhanced dramatically by the fact that Bogart is a man wanted for murder seeking to avoid capture in the streets of San Francisco, one of the most naturally photogenic cities of them all, with a particular emphasis on film noir, as evidenced by such forties' triumphs as "Maltese Falcon" starring Bogart and "Out of the Past" with Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer and Kirk Douglas, which debuted in theaters the same year that "Dark Passage" was released. "D.O.A." with Edmond O'Brien came along not long thereafter.

The important element to achieve maximum entertainment value is to suspend judgment on all the coincidences that occur since it is easy to tear holes in the plot by using logic. It is essential instead to concentrate on the film's brooding mood, on the theme of a man who is a victim of circumstances and to the San Francisco Police has committed 3 murders when he is innocent on all counts.

Bacall plays a woman who feels for Bogart since her rich and famous father was also sent to San Quentin Prison for a murder he did not commit, dying there. Bogart engineers a daring escape from San Quentin as the film commences and is picked up alongside the road and provided with food and shelter by Bacall, after which a romance ultimately ensues.

To mention how Bogart arrived in his predicament along with some of the plot twists would be to divulge too much, but it can be said that the woman who testified against Bogart and was responsible for the jury finding him guilty was Agnes Moorehead, a perpetual busybody that Bacall seeks to avoid like the plague, but who insists upon pursuing her.

Bruce Bennett had been previously engaged to Moorehead but broke it off when he learned about her true nature. Moorehead no longer is interested in Bennett, but at the same time objects to him spending time with Bacall out of spite.

Not only does Bogart need to worry about Moorehead finding out that Bacall is helping him and providing a place to stay. He needs to worry about the police and the citizenry since his face has been plastered in the local papers and a $5,000 reward is finally posted concerning his capture.

A kindly and lonely cab driver, played by Tom D'Andrea, believes in Bogart and steers him to a plastic surgeon that has lost his license and performs surgery for people who need to elude the law. One of the film's most dramatic as well as creative scenes involves a montage along with dialogue involving Bogart and the craggy-faced plastic surgeon, played by Houseley Stevenson.
