Movie Reviews of Dark Harbor

Movie Review: Feels almost like a play
Summary: 3 Stars

Like many, probably most, people checking out this DVD, I got it because Alan Rickman is in it and I often (though not always) enjoy watching his performances. From the perspective of watching Rickman practicing the craft of acting (I know that sound god-awful pretentious), I was not disappointed. This movie is almost like a play with 3 performers. The performances are almost entirely what carries the film -- settings, props, cinematography, are secondary compared to most films. The script calls for the performances to be ambiguous -- appearances are always deceiving, and it was interesting to see how the actors achieved this.

The DVD includes a commentary by the director. Basically, you can watch the movie with a voice-over by the director about how scenes were done, what the performers had difficulty with, why a scene was set up the way it was, etc. This is great! Make sure to re-watch with the commentary if you're at all interested in how movies are made. I wish all DVDs would come with this.

As for the film's entertainment value, well, this is not a DVD that I would rent to watch with friends on a Saturday night. This was more like a "Wednesday night watch by myself with the remote so I can ponder scenes multiple times" kind of DVD. As for buying versus renting, well, if you're an obsessive Rickman fan for whom the thought of photographic proof that he is a man (as if there were any doubt) gives you heart palpations, then by all means buy it. Everyone else should probably rent first and then decide.

Note (for those wanting to savor 'the Voice'): Rickman affects an American accent -- that drifts around regionally, a few words come out with a distinctly southern lilt even. As an American, I found this too noticeable not to be distracting.

Movie Review: Three characters trapped on an island
Summary: 3 Stars

Dark Harbor features Alan Rickman as David Weinberg, Polly Walker as Alexis Chandler-Weinberg, and Norman Reedus as the Young Man.
I hate "reviews" that are nothing more than plot synopses, especially those that give away surprise endings or get the facts mangled, so I'll try to avoid that trap. Dark Harbor is a claustrophobic film about a stifling marriage and what happens when a drifter gets drawn into the story. Alan Rickman is multi-layered and superb, as usual, in the role of the frustrated husband. Polly Walker brings a nice mix of edginess and innocence to the young wife. But Norman Reedus does not do a thing for me as the drifter; he's a skanky cypher, and I can't imagine anyone risking it all to connect with this character.
That said, the film does an effective build of tension among the threesome, with some ambiguous scenes and dialogue. A highlight of the movie is the little speech about love that Rickman's character delivers near the end of the story. Another highlight, also near the end, is when Rickman's character strips naked and goes skinny dipping in the harbor. Not many actors are that brave, especially ones over 50.
This film is a must for Rickman fans, and a "maybe" for all others.

Movie Review: Love and Hate... Oh how to Choose
Summary: 3 Stars

Well, Dark harbor was a.... lets say.... wait. I rented it the first time I saw it and while in the car looking down at the case I guessed the ending. LOL! And well, at the time I didn't know I had. So that night as my girlfreind and I snuggled our pillows and watched it, we found our selves half watchin though the moive up until the End. And that was it the selling point of the movie. I love Alan Rickman and the ended just tyed the knot on the almost stakerest way I like him.

Now if you have a short attention span...this moive may not be for you. And yet if you are a Rickman lover, you will beable to sit though this moive, until the end.

**Spoiler**
Now this is a heed of warning there is slash in this moive I shall not tell between who. But if you desest those things this movie is MOST NOT FOR YOU!

Movie Review: don't watch the end
Summary: 3 Stars

I admit I rented the movie so I can watch Alan Rickman. Just stare at him. Which I did and was very entertained by him. I wasn't sure why he was trying for an American accent because his wife didn't have one. But it was fun watching him try. The problem is that it would have made a better romance than a thriller. If they cut out the stalker completely, I'd have given this five stars.

The ending will have me in therapy for a while, I'll admit. There's an excellent nude shot of Rickman hopping off a boat. But, really, once you see the naked boat scene, turn it off because the last scene is disturbing for all you people out there who fantasize about the man. Please tell me the actor did NOT do what they showed him do. I think it was a camera trick but it grossed me out just the same.

Good rental. Bad purchase.

Movie Review: Dark Harbor
Summary: 3 Stars

Was an interesting twist on the drifter, love triangle story line. This one is not for those looking for the typical love story themed movie. And not for those who are steeped in the safe haven of normal thinking. The ending left me rewinding to make sure that I had seen the ending properly. Sometimes the mind is not as quick as the eye and this one definitely left me thinking about whether things are really as we perceive them to be.
