Movie Reviews of Dante's Peak - Collector's Edition

Movie Review: DON'T LOOK BACK!
Summary: 5 Stars

In the quiet town of Dante's Peak, the locals are celebrating their award for second best place to live in the United States.Meanwhile, there is fire on the mountain above just waiting to let go,and only one man knows it.Peirce Brosnan stars as Harry Dalton,an expert volcanologist who sees a serious problem coming for this quiet little town.Unfortunately,Harry cannot seem to convince his boss or the city councel that something fishy is afoot. As most survival/nature movies go,there is lost love...and love anew, stubborn people, and a really awesome/unstoppable truck to keep our hero and his posse safe through all kinds of offroading. If you loved Twister because of the Dodge Ram, you will faint over this movie.Unlike it's same year counterpart "Volcano", Dante's Peak draws most of it's strength from it's commitment to realism and accuracy.Having been awarded for it's use of special effects, you will often feel as though you are seeing real footage of an eruption and the film also does a good job of portraying an unanticipated evacuation. Bottom line,Dante's Peak is a gripping thrillride about a mountian ready to blow and a town not ready to accept the truth. With a heartpounding score, great action and a good plot,it's no wonder why I enjoy this movie and I hope you will as well.

Movie Review: Dante's Peak
Summary: 5 Stars

A vulcanologist arrives at a countryside named Dante's Peak after his boss instructs him to investigate the possibility of a dormant volcano (Dante's Peak) getting active again in that region. As story progresses, we see that Dalton is getting increasingly convinced that the volcano might blow up but his boss is reluctant to declare an emergency in the city yet because of possibility that if the volcano finally does never erupt, the real estate prices will plummet anyway and the city might loose a huge financial investment deal. Unfortunately, the common residents of the area know nothing about it until very late. Finally, when Dante's Peak does erupt, the city panics, some does not survive the catastrophe, including Dalton's boss and for Dalton and the mayor of the city who falls in love with Dalton and her children, it becomes a race against the pyroclastic cloud to save their own lives. There is plenty of good action and it really keeps you on the edge of your seats. Pierce & Linda gave outstanding performances and the photography was great through out the entire movie. Very entertaining.

Movie Review: A St Helens rip-off
Summary: 5 Stars

Since I didn't read all the reviews, somebody probably has already pointed this out, but Dantes Peak really doesn't make any pretenses about being a re-telling of the St Helens eruption. Not only is St Helens referred to verbally at least 3 times in the movie, but much of the on location filming took place at St Helens summit and crater. I can say this with confidence as I climbed her back in 2003, and I'd know the view anywhere. They even have a stubborn elderly resident (Linda Hamiltons' mother-in-law) who lives up on the mountain (about the same distance as Harry Truman lived) and refuses to evacuate, thus giving us the indispensable, if not very watered down, Harry truman character. Although the dialogue gets unbearably corny at times, I gave this 5 stars because its great entertainment. The special effects are much better than in 1986's release of St Helens (starring Art Carney as Harry Truman)and I happen to love a good volcano flick and, as the choices are limited, this one is probably one of the best.

Movie Review: Just Like A Washington State Eruption
Summary: 5 Stars

Dante's Peak, set in the charming and fictional town of Dante's Peak, in the beautiful Washington State, with a towering, and daunting neighbour in the background: Dante's Peak.

Set to be a STRATOVOLCANO, Dante's Peak looked amazingly real compared to Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams of Washington.

In the book, the volcano was about 9,100 feet. If you read the Dante's Peak The Book, you can learn more about the characters and the setting.

The movie follows Harry Dalton(Brosnan), Mayor Rachel Wando (Hamilton), Graham Wando(Foley), Lauren Wando(Smith), the USGS team, the towns people and the rest during the massive eruption. In the end the volcano had a Mount St. Helens eruption, and the final product in the credits looks almost like Mount St. Helens.

Dante's Peak a really great and captivating disaster story.

Movie Review: Extraordinary Special Effects !
Summary: 5 Stars

A volcano blows up next to a beautiful town. You do get all you can expect from this content. Romance, action, drama, etc. Good caracter build-up and good story telling.

The actors are also good. Specially Linda Hamilton as the Town's mayor and Pierce Brosnan as the expert volcanologist. But the children and townfolk are also very good. The children's grandma is not as good, maybe because the caracter is not very well developed. Linda Hamilton plays her role much better than in both Terminator films. Casting her was a clever move. Pierce Brosnan is getting better with each film he does.

This DVD is incredible in special effects. Screen and sound are very good. You can also get some interesting extras such as behind the scenes and special effects explanations.

Overall it is a very good movie that takes advantage of a good home theater.
